The platform was launched this week by its owner, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2026-01-23\/keep-scrolling-tiktok-has-finalized-its-us-joint-venture\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ByteDance, the same Chinese parent that oversees TikTok.<\/a> As the video circulates online, the Motion Picture Assn. (MPA), and other  industry stakeholders have called out the video for its unauthorized use of copyrighted works.<\/p>\n<p>MPA CEO Charles Rivkin wrote in a statement that the company \u201cshould immediately cease its infringing activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a single day, the Chinese AI service Seedance 2.0 has engaged in unauthorized use of U.S. copyrighted works on a massive scale,\u201d wrote Rivkin. \u201cBy launching a service that operates without meaningful safeguards against infringement, ByteDance is disregarding well-established copyright law that protects the rights of creators and underpins millions of American jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The video was<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RuairiRobinson\/status\/2021394940757209134?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2021446414337966098%7Ctwgr%5E928129fa559ac16cfc569d428700f7f197adb11a%7Ctwcon%5Es3_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hollywoodreporter.com%2Fmovies%2Fmovie-news%2Fai-video-tom-cruise-brad-pitt-writer-warning-1236504200%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"> posted on X by Irish filmmaker Ruairi Robinson<\/a>. His post said the 15-second video came from a two-line prompt he put into Seedance 2.0.<\/p>\n<p>Rhett Reese, writer-producer of movies like the \u201cDeadpool\u201d trilogy and \u201cZombieland,\u201d responded to <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RhettReese\/status\/2021446414337966098\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Robinson\u2019s post, writing,<\/a> \u201cI hate to say it. It\u2019s likely over for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He goes on to say that soon people will be able to sit at a computer and create a movie <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RhettReese\/status\/2021594352188060015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cindistinguishable from what Hollywood now releases.\u201d<\/a> Reese says he\u2019s fearful of losing his job as increasingly powerful AI tools  advance into creative fields.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was blown away by the Pitt v Cruise video because it is so professional. That\u2019s exactly why I\u2019m scared,\u201d <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RhettReese\/status\/2021978478938403007\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">wrote <\/a>Reese <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RhettReese\/status\/2021978478938403007\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">on X.<\/a> \u201cMy glass half empty view is that Hollywood is about to be revolutionized\/decimated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> Reese isn\u2019t alone in thinking AI could potentially \u201cdecimate\u201d Hollywood and take away jobs. Creating protections against AI was one of the main reasons <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2023-05-01\/writers-strike-what-to-know-wga-guild-hollywood-productions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">both SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild went on strike in 2023.<\/a> But some members argue that those measures \u2014 now nearly three years old \u2014  did not go far enough.<\/p>\n<p>As <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2026-02-09\/sag-aftra-starts-negotiations-with-studios-for-new-contract\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SAG-AFTRA reentered contract negotiations with the studios earlier this week<\/a>, AI is still one of the union\u2019s highest priorities. It\u2019s expected that the actors union could propose what has been called the Tilly tax, a fee that studios would have to pay to the union in exchange for using an AI-generated actor \u2014 a response to the introduction of Hollywood\u2019s first AI actor, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2025-10-02\/why-hollywood-actors-are-outraged-at-ai-character-tilly-norwood\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tilly Norwood.<\/a><\/p>\n<p> In a statement to The Times, SAG-AFTRA confirmed that the union stands with the studios in \u201ccondemning the blatant infringement\u201d from Seedance 2.0, as video includes \u201cunauthorized use of our members\u2019 voices and likenesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is unacceptable and undercuts the ability of human talent to earn a livelihood.
