{"id":17765,"date":"2025-10-22T13:10:22","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T13:10:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/17765\/"},"modified":"2025-10-22T13:10:22","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T13:10:22","slug":"the-sports-report-lakers-lose-their-season-opener","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/17765\/","title":{"rendered":"The Sports Report: Lakers lose their season opener"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/lakers\/story\/2025-10-21\/los-angeles-lakers-golden-state-warriors-season-opening-game-recap\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">From Broderick Turner<\/a>: <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/lakers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Lakers<\/a> were not whole for their season opener and that meant <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/lakers\/story\/2025-10-20\/los-angeles-lakers-season-preview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Luka Doncic<\/a> had a heavier load to carry while <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/story\/2025-10-20\/fan-drops-lawsuit-against-lebron-james-small-claims-second-decision-retirement\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LeBron James<\/a> sat on the bench injured in this game against rivals Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors.<\/p>\n<p>So, the question while James recovers from sciatica injury on his right side, is who will fill his void and help Doncic navigate the stretch his running mate is out.<\/p>\n<p>The Lakers didn\u2019t get that complete answer Tuesday night, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/game\/gsw-vs-lal-0022500002\/box-score\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">falling 119-109<\/a> to the Warriors at Crypto.com Arena despite Doncic\u2019s impressive performance of a near triple-double with 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists.<\/p>\n<p>James is entering an NBA-record 23rd season, but it was the first time over his career that he has missed a season opener.<\/p>\n<p>He sat on the end of the Lakers\u2019 bench dressed in a double-breasted suit, cheering his teammates on, offering words of encouragement when necessary, knowing that was the only way he could help until returns to the court in mid-November.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to forget about LeBron,\u201d Lakers coach JJ Redick said. \u201cThe reality is when you\u2019re focused on the group that you have, you gotta make that group work. Sometimes you can just be like, \u2018Oh my God, we\u2019re gonna get LeBron back at some point.\u2019 Like it\u2019s awesome, but you are focused. Roberts, the Dodgers\u2019 manager, had something to say to a sellout crowd at Dodger Stadium, and to an audience watching on national television.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey said the Dodgers are ruining baseball,\u201d <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-10-18\/dodgers-ruining-baseball-shohei-ohtani-mark-walter\" data-autoplayable-video=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Roberts hollered<\/a>. \u201cLet\u2019s get four more wins and really ruin baseball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Dodgers had just vanquished the Milwaukee Brewers, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/story\/2025-07-19\/dodgers-brewers-finances-mlb-americas-team\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a team that did everything right<\/a>, with four starting pitchers whose contracts total $1.35 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The Dodgers will square off in the World Series against the Toronto Blue Jays, who advanced to the Fall Classic for the first time since 1993 after beating the Seattle Mariners in the ALCS.<\/p>\n<p>The Brewers led the major leagues in victories this year. Trout said that Skaggs showed no signs of drug use but that he knew Kay had a drug problem.<\/p>\n<p>Trout, a three-time American League most valuable player, has been with the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/angels\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Angels<\/a> his entire 15-year career and is under contract through 2030. He was a teammate of Skaggs from 2014-19, when the left-handed pitcher <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/angels\/la-sp-tyler-skaggs-angels-dies-texas-statement-20190701-story.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">died in a Texas hotel room<\/a> July 1, 2019, after snorting a counterfeit oxycodone pill that contained fentanyl, a powerful opioid.<\/p>\n<p>Kay was <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2022-10-11\/angels-eric-kay-sentenced-tyler-skaggs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sentenced to 22 years in federal prison Fournette finishes with 284 yards rushing in his first action since aggravating a left ankle injury on Sept. 24.
