The San Diego Gulls\u00a0returned from the All-Star break with a victory over\u00a0the Bakersfield Condors at Dignity Health Arena tonight,\u00a03-1.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Goaltender\u00a0Tomas Suchanek\u00a0made his sixth appearance of the season tonight, saving\u00a031-of-32\u00a0shots. Suchanek did not let up a goal until the final two minutes of the game, securing his second win of the season.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
“[Tomas] Suchanek\u2019s perspective, that\u2019s a big-time game for him,”\u00a0head\u00a0coach Matt\u00a0McIlvane\u00a0said. “He\u2019s\u00a0been going through the break, he got a game in, he got practices in, so it was easy to keep him going. These are the kind of performances we expect from him because\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0done this force before.\u00a0I think he\u00a0was excellent\u00a0in\u00a0the net tonight, and\u00a0I think the team\u00a0collapsed well at times in front of him to help protect him as well.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
Matthew Phillips\u00a0found the first goal of the game\u00a0on a powerplay\u00a0to\u00a0give the Gulls an early lead. The forward now totals\u00a010-22=32\u00a0points this season,\u00a0tallying the second most points for all Gulls skaters.\u00a0Phillips only trails behind\u00a0Sasha\u00a0Pastujov\u00a0who\u00a0logged his 100th\u00a0career AHL point as he tallied an assist on\u00a0the opening\u00a0goal. The\u00a022-year-old forward has found a\u00a0total of\u00a037 goals and 63 assists in his AHL career\u00a0and holds 32 points this season.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
It was proven why\u00a0Tim Washe\u00a0was\u00a0credited\u00a0AHL All-Star honors as he found his 14th\u00a0goal of the season to give the Gulls a two-goal lead in the second frame.\u00a0The\u00a0rookie\u00a0has logged 14-12=26 points in his 32 games played this season.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Defenseman\u00a0Tristan Luneau\u00a0picked up a point\u00a0as he was credited with the secondary assist on\u00a0Phillips\u2019 goal.\u00a0Luneau\u00a0totals\u00a015 points this season, ranking\u00a0second amongst all Gulls\u00a0defensemen.\u00a0\u00a0Nico\u00a0Myatovic\u00a0found his\u00a0eighth assist of the season\u00a0as he\u00a0picked up the lone assist on Washe\u2019s goal.\u00a0Myatovic\u00a0has logged four\u00a0of those\u00a0assists\u00a0in his past five games.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The win was secured tonight when\u00a0Bakersfield\u00a0failed to\u00a0stop a pass which\u00a0landed in the empty net. The goal was credited to\u00a0Nathan Gaucher\u00a0as he was the last Gull to touch the puck.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Gulls were perfect on both the powerplay and the penalty kill, showing off the improvement of their special teams. The team went 1-for-1 on the powerplay and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.\u00a0San Diego now ranks\u00a0fourth\u00a0on the penalty kill\u00a0amongst\u00a0all AHL\u00a0teams\u00a0as\u00a0their kill sits at\u00a084.6%.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Gulls and Condors will get right back at it tomorrow night as they head to Pechanga Arena San Diego to finish out the home-and-home series (6 p.m. PST).\u00a0<\/p>\n
“I\u2019m not sitting here thinking that we played a perfect game,”\u00a0McIlvane\u00a0said. “There are certainly the elements of seven days off and\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0some things to clean up,\u00a0but\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0really impressed with the way the guys were able to get focused. Being able to reset and refocus to raise our level for tomorrow will be our\u00a0objective.”<\/p>\n
