SANGER, Calif. (KFSN) — On Friday morning, hundreds of Sanger Unified Students participated in a forum organized by students and supported by school leaders.<\/p>\n
During an extended morning break, at least 10 students stood at the podium at both campuses, expressing where they stand on topics, including ICE activity.<\/p>\n
One student sharing her fear and experiences…<\/p>\n
“When leadership uses language that dehumanizes immigrants or pushed policies that disproportionately communities of color, it sends a message of who belongs and who does not,” the student said.<\/p>\n
Another student highlighting her perspective about immigration and why she believes having a voice is important.<\/p>\n
“And history shows that when young people stand up, when we refuse to accept injustice, change follows,” the student said. “So let this protest not just be a moment, let it be a movement. Stand together, shout together. Be heard together.”<\/p>\n
While the organized forums served as a safe way for students to share their voice on campus, about 100 students at Sanger High decided to walk out and protest, like many others have done across the country in recent weeks.<\/p>\n
“A lot of people came out here today and it was not about ditching, it was about making a real change,” a Sanger High student said. “The new generation, the way we are handling stuff, if we have an issue we are going to get things done.”<\/p>\n
Superintendent Dennis Wiechmann says staff was prepared for multiple scenarios but despite the walkout, he is overjoyed with the success of the forums at both campuses.<\/p>\n
“It did not distract from what the students were doing on campus and we have video of both and just really proud of our two high schools coming together and working together,” Wiechmann said.<\/p>\n
He says the forums were an opportunity for students to share multiple perspectives.<\/p>\n
Most of the students had signs against ICE activity and cheered loudly for every classmate who shared passionate and brave words.<\/p>\n
The principal at Sanger West thanked the students and is also very proud.<\/p>\n
“That was the goal, to provide something for our students to express themselves and I think we really accomplished that here today,” Sanger West principal Ryan Osier said.<\/p>\n
School leaders say this morning was possible thanks to the relationship they have with students.<\/p>\n
Person arrested during Sanger High walkout protest<\/p>\n
A motorist in opposition to the demonstration was arrested after engaging the group.<\/p>\n
Police say during that incident, a water bottle was thrown and officers intervened.<\/p>\n
The motorist was told to leave but refused and was ultimately arrested for interfering with officers who were working to maintain public safety.<\/p>\n
They have not been identified.<\/p>\n
