Officials with the National Weather Service are forecasting\u00a0heavy rains,\u00a0possible thunderstorms\u00a0and\u00a0strong winds\u00a0as a powerful storm system\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0expected to last well into the week\u00a0makes its way into Southern California.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0winter storm warning<\/a>\u00a0has already been issued for the Eastern San Gabriel Mountains and Northern Ventura County Mountains\u00a0as much as two feet of snow could blanket higher elevations.<\/p>\n

At lower elevations in the valleys and coastal regions, forecasters say\u00a0residents might see as much as two and a half inches of rain on Monday and as much as four inches throughout the week.<\/p>\n

Residents in mountain and foothill communities may get as much as five inches of rain tomorrow with totals as high as eight inches\u00a0as the\u00a0weather system moves\u00a0out of the region on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The strongest part of the storm,\u00a0according to NWS<\/a>, is expected Monday, with San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara,\u00a0Ventura\u00a0and L.A. counties\u00a0all in the path\u00a0of two low pressure systems that are forecast to\u00a0merge\u00a0overnight and produce rain throughout the day.<\/p>\n

Widespread winds, with gusts of up to 60 miles per hour, are expected, as well as 20% to 40% chance of thunderstorms\u00a0and\u00a0possible tornados.<\/p>\n

Weather officials are urging residents in low lying or vulnerable areas, such as\u00a0recent burn scars, to start taking precautions now and be prepared to evacuate.<\/p>\n

An evacuation warning will take effect from 9 p.m. Sunday through 9 a.m. Tuesday for the Palisades, Sunset and Hurst burn scar areas due to the risk of mud and debris\u00a0flows\u00a0during the storm.<\/p>\n

Los Angeles officials said preparations are already underway ahead of the storm.\u00a0Mayor Karen Bass said first responders, Public Works crews and other city personnel are coordinating resources in anticipation of heavy rain and potential impacts.<\/p>\n

Motorists should be cautious of treacherous conditions and\u00a0possible flooding\u00a0on roadways. Low elevation snow could\u00a0impact\u00a0commuters on Interstate 5 and Highway 33, as well as other low-lying passes\u00a0through Wednesday.<\/p>\n

NWS officials suggest adjusting travel plans if possible and\u00a0being prepared for significant delays due to\u00a0possible flooding\u00a0and closed roads.<\/p>\n

Residents are urged to\u00a0monitor\u00a0forecasts, sign up for alerts through NotifyLA.org, and avoid unnecessary mountain travel during hazardous conditions.<\/p>\n
