Less than a week after the murder of Mart\u00ednez, Maldonado was fatally shot<\/a> outside her home. Three people were convicted and sentenced<\/a> to between 20 and 24 years for the killing.<\/p>\n Still, those responsible for ordering the killings have not been arrested<\/a> for either case.<\/p>\n On Saturday, journalists and family members of Mart\u00ednez and Maldonado came together for a ceremony to formally unveil the mural. It is located in the Calle Segunda and Paseo de los H\u00e9roes bridge, next to the access point for the SENTRI and Fast Lanes at the Mexican side of the San Ysidro border crossing.<\/p>\n The Baja California Attorney General\u2019s Office said late last month that the investigations in both cases are ongoing.<\/p>\n \u201cThe State Attorney General, Mar\u00eda Elena Andrade Ram\u00edrez, has instructed staff to continue with the necessary proceedings to arrest more suspects involved in these crimes against the press,\u201d the office said in a Jan. 23 statement.<\/p>\n Rosa Mart\u00ednez, Margarito\u2019s sister, remembered him as someone who was always passionate about his work and an inspiration.<\/p>\n She said that she will continue to demand answers. \u201cTomorrow it could be another journalist,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cLet\u2019s do it for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n Prosecutors have said that Mart\u00ednez\u2019s murder was likely the result of an erroneous belief that he was responsible for information published in a weekly newspaper and on social media that exposed a criminal leader.<\/p>\n \u00d3scar Maldonado, Lourdes\u2019s brother, said he hopes her case won\u2019t be forgotten. \u201cWe still don\u2019t know who gave the order,\u201d he said. \u201cThree people are in jail, but we don\u2019t know who sent them.\u201d<\/p>\n He remembered his sister as a strong, independent woman who had a successful career.<\/p>\n In 2019, Maldonado attended a press conference in Mexico City and asked then-President Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador for help amid a labor dispute with a TV station owned by former Baja California Gov. Jaime Bonilla. Maldonado told the president that she even feared for her life.
