SCOTTSDALE — The Giants are pretty stocked\u00a0in the outfield this spring, but there’s a decent chance that they will end up in a much different situation by the time Opening Day rolls around.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Luis Matos and Jerar Encarnacion both are out of minor-league options, but on Sunday, the front office added a bit of depth in case one or both ends up elsewhere. Veteran Will Brennan signed a one-year deal and reported to camp in time for the first full squad workout.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Brennan, 28, got big-league time in each of the past four seasons\u00a0with the Cleveland Guardians. His best year was 2024, when he hit eight homers and had a wRC+ of 98. Like many\u00a0of the players added recently, he has a low strikeout rate and has a good eye at the plate. He does have an option remaining.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“We’ve liked him for some time,” general manager Zack Minasian said. “He plays the game really hard. A gritty, grindy type. He controls the strike zone. He can move around the outfield, mostly the corner outfield spots. He’s a left-handed hitter. Tony Vitello and Jayce Tingler both have familiarity so (there were) a lot of great reports on the person and we’re happy to add him to the outfield.”<\/p>\n
Brennan had UCL surgery last June after a hot start in Triple-A, where he was hitting .304. Minasian said he should be a full go in camp.<\/p>\n
“It’s a left-handed bat and it’s a good at-bat,” he said. “Hopefully it just gives us another option to look at as we look at the competition out there.”<\/p>\n
To clear a 40-man roster spot, the Giants put right-hander Rowan Wick on the 60-day IL. Wick is recovering from Tommy John and will not be an option this season, although the Giants have an option on him for 2027.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Minasian said the front office targeted him early after getting strong reports from their scouts in Japan, where Wick pitched last season and posted a 0.84 ERA.\u00a0<\/p>\n
