{"id":180650,"date":"2026-02-16T22:11:06","date_gmt":"2026-02-16T22:11:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/180650\/"},"modified":"2026-02-16T22:11:06","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T22:11:06","slug":"presidents-day-storm-brings-heavy-rain-to-southern-california-but-so-far-no-havoc-orange-county-register","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/180650\/","title":{"rendered":"Presidents\u2019 Day storm brings heavy rain to Southern California but so far no havoc \u2013 Orange County Register"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An intense Presidents\u2019 Day storm arrived over parts of Southern California on Monday morning, Feb. 16, leading to heavy rains, strong winds, and flash-flood and evacuation warnings.<\/p>\n<p>It is the first of three storms expected to land over Southern California this week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve seen some very impressive rainfall rates,\u201d said David Gomberg, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. \u201cWhen you get that intense rainfall, that increases your chance of urban flooding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Parts of western Los Angeles, near UCLA and Venice, received over an inch of rain in an hour.<\/p>\n<p>Evacuation warnings were in effect for burn scars of the Palisades, Eaton, Hurst, and Sunset fires and will last until 9 a.m. Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities remained on standby for any weather-related issues or emergencies.<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles International Airport issued a ground stop for departing flights Monday morning, according to ABC7, with this first storm offering the risk of thunderstorms and reduced visibility.<\/p>\n<p>Winds of 45 mph to 65 mph whipped near the Palisades burn scar and in the foothills of the San Gabriel mountains on Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p>This storm is expected to taper off Monday evening, though showers might return in the overnight hours, with a 10% to 15% chance of isolated thunderstorms.<\/p>\n<p>In Orange County and the Inland Empire, strong winds were possible at times until 8 a.m. Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>As of early Monday afternoon, no debris flows or weather-related injuries had been reported.<\/p>\n<p>The second storm was expected to arrive over parts of the region Tuesday night, Feb. 17, and last into Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are expecting a potential for snow over the Interstate 5 (Freeway) Grapevine area by Tuesday night and Wednesday,\u201d said Mike Lofford, another Weather Service meteorologist. \u201cSo there could be some delays or closures on the highway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The third storm, on Thursday, is expected to be fast-moving, rolling though the area in the day and going into late afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s probably going to be, you know, like three to six hours of moderate to locally heavy rain,\u201d Lofford said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"An intense Presidents\u2019 Day storm arrived over parts of Southern California on Monday morning, Feb. 16, leading to&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":180651,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[7,9,8,138,137,100,611,612,5518,136],"class_list":{"0":"post-180650","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-california","8":"tag-california","9":"tag-california-headlines","10":"tag-california-news","11":"tag-crime-and-public-safety","12":"tag-los-angeles-county","13":"tag-news","14":"tag-orange-county","15":"tag-riverside-county","16":"tag-san-bernardino-county","17":"tag-top-stories"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/180650","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=180650"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/180650\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/180651"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=180650"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=180650"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=180650"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
