More than 2,500 community leaders will gather at the Fresno Convention Center Tuesday morning as Steve Green, president of Hobby Lobby, delivers the keynote message at the annual Fresno-Clovis Prayer Breakfast.<\/p>\n
Green\u2019s journey started with assembling picture frames for seven cents apiece at age seven to leading a $7.5 billion retail empire. Starting in his father\u2019s garage in 1970 with a $600 loan, Hobby Lobby has grown into the world\u2019s largest privately owned arts-and-crafts retailer, with over 1,000 stores in 48 states and 46,000 employees.<\/p>\n
Since becoming president in 2004, Green has guided the company through remarkable growth while maintaining the family\u2019s Christian values. Under Green\u2019s leadership, Hobby Lobby made the decision to close all stores on Sundays \u2014 forgoing $100 million in annual sales \u2014 to honor their commitment to giving employees a day of rest. The company also tithes half of its profits to philanthropic causes.<\/p>\n
Green\u2019s message centers on navigating the challenges of maintaining values in a rapidly changing marketplace. His experience leading a multi-generational family business \u2014 working alongside his father David (founder and CEO), mother Barbara, brother Mart and sister Darsee \u2014 offers insight into preserving family legacy while scaling to national prominence.<\/p>\n
Green has made significant contributions as founder and chairman of the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C. The 430,000-square-foot museum, which opened in 2017, has welcomed over 2 million visitors and houses the Green Collection \u2014 tens of thousands of biblical artifacts acquired since 2009.<\/p>\n
The annual prayer breakfast started in the 1940s with five businessmen meeting at a Divisadero Street restaurant, and has evolved into one of the region\u2019s highest-attended annual events, bringing together faith-based, civic and community leaders in prayer and fellowship.<\/p>\n
Past speakers have included NFL Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy in 2024<\/a> and Dallas Jenkins, director of \u201cThe Chosen,\u201d<\/a> the first-ever multi-season program about the life of Jesus<\/p>\n
