He was 96.<\/p>\n<p>The filmmaker\u2019s death was announced by his family Monday in a statement released by Zipporah Films, Wiseman\u2019s distribution company.<\/p>\n<p>In a career that lasted nearly 60 years, Wiseman produced and directed 45 films beginning in 1967 with \u201cTiticut Follies,\u201d a documentary on the the patient-inmates of Bridgewater State Hospital for the Criminally Insane in Massachusetts, through 2023\u2019s \u201cMenus-Plaisirs \u2014 Les Troisgros,\u201d a documentary on the Troisgros family\u2019s Michelin three-starred restaurant in Ouches, France. His final film earned universal critical acclaim, and was recognized as the best nonfiction film of 2023 by the New York Film Critics Circle, the Los Angeles Film Critics Assn. His films, to an extent, reflected that transatlantic residency in their freshness of perspective. They display an innate curiosity and astonishing degrees of empathy, intelligence and perceptiveness, with subjects ranging from public and social institutions to cultural and specialized spaces and the minutiae of human interactions.<\/p>\n<p>Wiseman\u2019s other films included \u201cHigh School\u201d (1968), \u201cWelfare\u201d (1975), \u201cJuvenile Court\u201d (1973), \u201cPublic Housing\u201d (1997), \u201cLa Danse\u201d (2009), \u201cNational Gallery\u201d (2014), \u201cEx Libris \u2014 The New York Public Library\u201d (2017) and <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/story\/2020-10-27\/city-hall-review-frederick-wiseman-boston-documentary\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cCity Hall\u201d<\/a> (2020). The varied body of work earned three Emmy Awards and an honorary Academy Award. Wiseman was also awarded Guggenheim and MacArthur Prize fellowships.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond documentaries, the director also made three fiction films, \u201cSeraphita\u2019s Diary\u201d (1982), \u201cThe Last Letter\u201d (2002) and \u201cA Couple\u201d (2022). In <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/story\/2022-11-18\/a-couple-review-frederick-wiseman-sophia-tolstoy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reviewing the last<\/a>, Chang wrote, \u201cI suspect [Wiseman] is no more likely to impose himself on one of his fictions than he would on one of his documentaries, which \u2018A Couple\u2019 may resemble more than it appears. He graduated from Willams College and Yale Law School before embarking on a filmmaking career in the mid-1960s. He remained staunchly independent, establishing Zipporah Films, named for his wife, in 1971, in order to maintain control over distribution of his work. <\/p>\n<p>In addition to his filmmaking career, Wiseman worked as a theater director and actor, including a recent appearance in Rebecca Zlotowski\u2019s 2025 film <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/story\/2026-01-15\/private-life-review-jodie-foster-daniel-auteuil-rebecca-zlotowski\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cA Private Life,\u201d<\/a> starring Jodie Foster.<\/p>\n<p>Wiseman\u2019s wife of 65 years, Zipporah Batshaw Wiseman, died 2021. He is survived by his two sons, David (Jennifer) and Eric (Kristen Stowell), and three grandchildren, Benjamin, Charlie and Tess, as well as his friend and collaborator Karen Konicek, with whom he worked for 45 years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Frederick Wiseman, a preeminent documentary filmmaker, has died.
