But that doesn\u2019t mean the other categories can\u2019t shine bright. And during the 78th Oscars, held at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles on March 5, 2006, that\u2019s exactly what happened. Here\u2019s what unspooled in the animated feature, song, makeup, costume, foreign-language film (now called international feature film) and live-action short film categories 20 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>A first for South Africa            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"Director Gavin Hood accepts the Best Foreign Language Film of the Year award for &quot;Tsotsi&quot;\"   width=\"2000\" height=\"1243\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1771332609_801_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>Director Gavin Hood accepts the Oscar for the South African Oscar submission \u201cTsotsi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(Mark Boster \/ Los Angeles Times)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTsotsi,\u201d director Gavin Hood\u2019s film about a young troublemaker who carjacks a vehicle only to find a baby inside, racked up South Africa\u2019s first-ever Oscar win in the international feature category. It was the country\u2019s second nomination, and the first African film not made in French to win.<\/p>\n<p>Hood accepted the award from Will Smith and spoke briefly in Zulu before shifting to English: \u201cGod bless Africa.\u201d He singled out stars Presley Chweneyagae and Terry Pheto, then added, \u201cWe may have foreign-language films, but our stories are the same as your stories. They\u2019re about the human heart and emotion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTsotsi\u201d was up against Italy\u2019s \u201cThe Beast in the Heart,\u201d France\u2019s \u201cJoyeux No\u00ebl,\u201d Palestine\u2019s \u201cParadise Now,\u201d and Germany\u2019s \u201cSophie Scholl \u2013 The Final Days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keeping things animated            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"Directors Nick Park and Steve Box\"   width=\"2000\" height=\"1444\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1771332609_186_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>Directors Nick Park, left, and Steve Box accept their Oscars for animated feature for their work on \u201cWallace &amp; Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(Mark Boster \/ Los Angeles Times)<\/p>\n<p>Nick Park, who had three Oscars prior to this evening, picked up his fourth (with first-time winner Steve Box) for animated feature with the stop-motion film about monstrous lapins, \u201cWallace &amp; Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit\u201d \u2014 and the bow-tie-wearing director even brought bow-ties for the statuettes he and Box held.<\/p>\n<p>They pointed out Peter Sallis, who at the time had voiced Wallace in the \u201cWallace &amp; Gromit\u201d films for 23 years, after accepting the statuettes from Reese Witherspoon. And together they honored another kind of star from the \u201cWallace\u201d films, chiming together, \u201cCracking cheese, Gromit!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWallace\u201d went up against Hayao Miyazaki\u2019s \u201cHowl\u2019s Moving Castle\u201d and \u201cTim Burton\u2019s Corpse Bride\u201d from Mike Johnson and Burton. \u201cCorpse\u201d and \u201cWere-Rabbit\u201d were the first stop-motion films to be nominated in the Oscars\u2019 animated feature category, first awarded in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>Easy street, even when it\u2019s hard            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"Songwriter Cedric Coleman, left front, and members from the Memphis rap group Three 6 Mafia\"   width=\"2000\" height=\"1511\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1771332609_291_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>Front: Cedric Coleman, left, and  Paul \u201cDJ Paul\u201d Beauregard. Terrill \/ Associated Press)<\/p>\n<p>Rap made a new foray into the original song category when \u201cIt\u2019s Hard Out Here for a Pimp,\u201d from \u201cHustle &amp; Flow,\u201d became the second original song in the genre to win the category. \u201cLose Yourself\u201d from \u201c8 Mile\u201d was the first winner, in 2003, for Marshall Mathers (Eminem), Jeff Bass and Luis Resto.<\/p>\n<p>The award went to Jordan Houston (Juicy J), Cedric Coleman, and Paul Beauregard (DJ Paul), who accepted on stage with \u201cHustle\u201d star and singer Taraji P. Henson. After accepting the award from Queen Latifah, Beauregard gave a lot of shout-outs to friends and family \u2014 and, surprisingly, fellow Oscar winner George Clooney: \u201cMy favorite man, he showed me love when I first met him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPimp\u201d won out over \u201cIn the Deep\u201d from the night\u2019s best picture winner \u201cCrash,\u201d with music by Kathleen \u201cBird\u201d York and Michael Becker and lyrics by York; and \u201cTravelin\u2019 Thru\u201d from \u201cTransamerica,\u201d music and lyrics by Dolly Parton.<\/p>\n<p>Short, but with a long tail            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"Writer Martin McDonagh\"   width=\"2000\" height=\"2581\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1771332610_777_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>Writer Martin McDonagh accepts the Oscar for live-action short for the film \u201cSix Shooter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(Mark Boster \/ Los Angeles Times)<\/p>\n<p>Though the short film (live action) Oscar doesn\u2019t always prove to be a harbinger for the future, in the case of 2006\u2019s winner \u2014 \u201cSix Shooter\u201d from director and five-time Tony-nominated playwright Martin McDonagh \u2014 it was an early sign of things to come. This was McDonagh\u2019s first nomination and win; two years later he\u2019d go on to direct features, starting with \u201cIn Bruges,\u201d ultimately earning six more Academy Award nominations.<\/p>\n<p>McDonagh was up against \u201cCashback\u201d by Sean Ellis and Lene Bausager, \u201cThe Last Farm\u201d by R\u00fanar R\u00fanarsson and Thor S. Sigurj\u00f3nsson, \u201cOur Time Is Up\u201d by Rob Pearlstein and Pia Clemente, and \u201cThe Runaway (Ausrei\u00dfer)\u201d by Ulrike Grote.<\/p>\n<p>Getting dressed and made up            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"Colleen Atwood accepts the Oscar for achievement in costume design\"   width=\"2000\" height=\"2644\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1771332610_612_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>Colleen Atwood accepts the Oscar for achievement in costume design for her work on \u201cMemoirs of a Geisha.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(Mark J. Terrill \/ Associated Press)<\/p>\n<p>The categories for makeup and costume design provided first-timers and a prior Oscar winner. \u201cThe Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe\u201d earned awards for Howard Berger and Tami Lane, neither of whom had been nominated before.
