FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — As people get sick with the flu and measles cases rise, the need for more infectious disease doctors is significant.<\/p>\n
That’s why UCSF Fresno is ensuring the next generation of doctors is prepared to treat patients with a range of viruses.<\/p>\n
The medical college offers a two-year Infectious Disease Fellowship, which gives them hands-on clinical and research training.<\/p>\n
Dr. Hebah Ghanem is the Infectious Disease Fellowship Program Director.<\/p>\n
Our fellowship is unique because of its diversity of cases. Our fellows see everything from ICU infection to immune suppressed population, to community acquired infection,” Dr. Ghanem says.<\/p>\n
The program accepts four fellows each year, who work with hospitals such as Community Regional Medical Center and the Fresno VA Medical Center. Dr. Ghanem explains that their program sees a strong retention rate.<\/p>\n
“I think we need to prepare our fellows and residents to be leaders in medicine. This is a very rewarding career,” she says.<\/p>\n
Applications for the program start at the end of July. But future fellows must have completed an internal medicine residency before applying.<\/p>\n
As new diseases emerge, education and preparedness are key to keeping the community not only healthy but also safe.<\/p>\n
