The next act will be dramatic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Live theater, which once dominated San Francisco\u2019s entertainment scene, nearly went extinct during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Producers and theater operators saw their balance sheets devastated as theaters went dark for more than a year. Shorenstein Hays Nederlander, which operated the Orpheum, Golden Gate, and Curran theaters, sold its interests to British group ATG Entertainment in 2021. The American Conservatory Theater, which operates the city\u2019s most prestigious acting school, transitioned to online classes and shut down its MFA program in 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">The big houses, which host the Broadway hits, are still struggling financially, despite reducing staff and operations, and many beloved indie venues have closed, leaving up-and-coming producers, actors, and staffers with fewer opportunities to showcase their work. A stunning 21 Bay Area theater companies have shuttered since 2020, 15 of them in San Francisco, according to Theatre Bay Area.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Three of those that closed \u2014 PianoFight, Cutting Ball Theater, and Exit Theatre \u2014 were within steps of one another on Taylor Street, where casual and professional theater nerds alike used to bar-hop and catch shows.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cWe\u2019re seeing the collapse of an ecology that used to be pretty special,\u201d said Shafer Mazow, executive director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zspace.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Z Space, (opens in new tab)<\/a> a Mission theater that caters to independent creators.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">What\u2019s left is a thinning landscape in which companies and talent make due with fewer resources. They tended to subscribe to entire seasons\u2019 worth of shows and donate still more at the end of each year. But their contributions and attendance have declined in the last three years, due to age or fear of a neighborhood that became synonymous with <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2024\/09\/11\/roar-shack-mid-market-bar-experimental-music\/\" data-post-id=\"20e775b4-b96e-4cec-9221-6bc2683281d3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">street crime <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2024\/09\/22\/mid-market-will-thrive-once-san-francisco-solves-its-drug-crisis\/\" data-post-id=\"972cd9b9-0c3e-41ca-aa3b-e4a84aba91de\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dereliction<\/a>. Attendance is rising among younger theatergoers, but not in sufficient numbers to compensate for the boomer dropoff.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cAudiences are coming back,\u201d said Pam MacKinnon, the outgoing artistic director of the American Conservatory Theater who has been at the helm of programming the nonprofit\u2019s two venues since 2018. \u201cWe just need them to come back the second time.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lean years at the box office<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">During the pandemic, industry leaders found themselves forced onto Zoom calls to \u201cmake hard decisions and figure out ways to operationalize them,\u201d MacKinnon recalled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cI am a director of plays and musicals,\u201d she added. Cutting jobs \u201cwas not what I signed up for.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">But when the world reopened, audiences didn\u2019t immediately reappear. The pandemic changed habits around in-person events of all kinds, making it harder to convince people to get off their couches \u2014 and devices \u2014 and into velvet seats.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">In the summer of 2023, the heads of the Bay Area\u2019s theater companies and leading arts administrators gathered at the ACT Strand Theater on Market Street to discuss the state of the industry. The event was titled \u201cRebuilding Our Communities,\u201d and the atmosphere was tense, said Jenny Cohn, a consultant with TRG Arts, who presented an economic analysis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">In 2022, revenue from Bay Area theaters was less than in 2021, when patrons and donors were motivated to turn out and \u201csave the arts,\u201d Cohn recalled. By mid-2023, businesses that were already underwater were running out of time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">It\u2019s clear that there has been a shift among audiences. Theater attendance since 2019 has dropped more than 20% among the biggest demographic, baby boomers, and between 50% to 67% among seniors, according to TRA Arts. During the same period, attendance by Gen X rose only 2.3% and millennials, 52%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Char Dubinsky, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Xennials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">a Xennial (opens in new tab)<\/a> who has lived in the Bay Area for 13 years, is a \u201cmajor theatre geek\u201d who used to go to 35-plus shows a year. But in 2024 and 2025, she made it to only about 15, citing higher costs. \u201cIt\u2019s just so expensive,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Soaring inflation has caused costs to climb for everything related to putting on a show: rent, wages, materials for building sets, even dry cleaning of costumes. Theaters experienced <a href=\"https:\/\/krfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/KennethRaininFoundation_ArtsCultureOrganizational-SustainabilitySurvey_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">a nearly 20% swell in expenses (opens in new tab)<\/a> between 2022 and 2023, according to the Kenneth Rainin Foundation, which conducted a study of 140 Bay Area arts organizations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">As a result, theaters operated at an average <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/entertainment\/article\/is-bay-area-theater-shrinking-19954713.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">7% budget deficit (opens in new tab)<\/a> in 2023. The ACT posted net losses of $9.5 million in 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/nonprofits\/organizations\/946135772\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">according to its latest tax filings. (opens in new tab)<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">For theater entrepreneurs like Dani Lancaster-Spinks, who took over the shuttered Stage Werx Theatre and relaunched it as Eclectic Box SF in 2023, that means she has to work harder to book their venues.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"A person with glasses and tattoos is working at a pink desk with a computer, reviewing documents in a room with blue walls and exposed cables.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"4500\" height=\"3375\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"block lazyloaded\" style=\"color:transparent;background-size:cover;background-position:50% 50%;background-repeat:no-repeat;background-image:url(&quot;data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg' viewBox='0 0 4500 3375'%3E%3Cfilter id='b' color-interpolation-filters='sRGB'%3E%3CfeGaussianBlur stdDeviation='20'\/%3E%3CfeColorMatrix values='1 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 100 -1' result='s'\/%3E%3CfeFlood x='0' y='0' width='100%25' height='100%25'\/%3E%3CfeComposite operator='out' in='s'\/%3E%3CfeComposite in2='SourceGraphic'\/%3E%3CfeGaussianBlur stdDeviation='20'\/%3E%3C\/filter%3E%3Cimage width='100%25' height='100%25' x='0' y='0' preserveAspectRatio='none' style='filter: url(%23b);' href='data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw=='\/%3E%3C\/svg%3E&quot;)\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1771425310_58_-S3840x2880-FPNG.png\"\/>Dani Lancaster-Spinks at work in the technical room at Eclectic Box SF.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cThe community is still cranking out really important and substantial art,\u201d she said. \u201cBut if the average producer used to do two shows a year before Covid, they\u2019re likely only doing one now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">That falloff translates to fewer employment opportunities for actors and back-of-house workers, said Jake Rodriguez, a sound designer who has worked at the ACT and Berkeley Rep, among other theaters, for decades. \u201cThe amount of shows in my backyard that I can work on has shrunk considerably,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">He has seen talented actors and other theater artists either move away or be forced to take on three jobs just to make ends meet. \u201cBeing an artist in the Bay Area is not for the faint of heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Selling to newbies <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">To reinforce shrinking subscriber bases, many theaters are shifting their programming mix and bolstering marketing to new audiences, including first-time patrons.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">That has meant less risk and experimentation and more tried-and-true classics, like \u201cCabaret\u201d; or star-driven shows, like the Neil Diamond musical \u201cA Beautiful Noise\u201d; and adaptations of motion pictures such as \u201cFrozen,\u201d \u201cParanormal Activity,\u201d and \u201cSchool of Rock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Movie adaptations can be more easily described via word of mouth, according to MacKinnon, which can bring more theater first-timers on board. \u201cWe are now marketing to a predominantly single-ticket buying environment,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">The same is happening at ATG, which oversees programming for nearly 5,500 seats across three venues in the city.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cThe subscription model is still important, but it\u2019s only a piece of the puzzle now,\u201d said Jamie Budgett, general manager of ATG\u2019s San Francisco operations. \u201cWe\u2019re certainly finding that, in general, audiences are buying their tickets later and later and aren\u2019t committing to as many things well in advance.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">ATG has started offering slimmed-down ticket packages, allowing buyers to select certain shows rather than commit to an entire season, which this year would have meant signing up for eight shows.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Susi Damilano, cofounder of the 22-year-old theater <a href=\"https:\/\/sfplayhouse.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">SF Playhouse (opens in new tab)<\/a>, has leaned into the mainstream. She said the 200-seat venue at 250 Post St. has been programming more popular shows than it would have pre-pandemic. At a time when other theaters have bled subscriptions, SF Playhouse has increased its recurring customer base by more than 45% over the past few years, from 2,524 in 2019 to 3,682 in 2025, Damilano said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The next act <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Like the downtown landscape around it, theater in San Francisco continues to change. In December, Carole Shorenstein Hays, a theatrical producer and heiress to one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/05\/27\/brandon-shorenstein-real-estate-dynasty-on-the-brink\/\" data-post-id=\"a74d588f-ccf4-423d-bc36-f2be7058706b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">city\u2019s most powerful real estate clans<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/12\/18\/sf-giants-buy-curran-theatre\/\" data-post-id=\"3d874f6c-61d7-4cc3-91ba-5d1ce604f439\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sold the Curran Theatre to the San Francisco Giants<\/a> at a loss, for $13.65 million. Her father, Walter, had helped assemble a local ownership group to keep the Giants in town in the early \u201990s, when the franchise appeared destined to leave.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cIt was a great back-to-the-future moment for us,\u201d Baer said. The Shorenstein \u201cfamily has been super involved with us, and we are proud to carry on what\u2019s been an amazing run.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">The programming at the Curran, which is booked more than a year in advance, will remain in place through the calendar year. Next year, the Giants organization will choose programming. It has committed to continue booking stage plays and musicals, while leveraging its stadium concert connections to expand live music programming.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Industry leaders also point to new productions and new marketing techniques as bright spots in the city. For example, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cofoundersthemusical.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Co-Founders (opens in new tab)<\/a>,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/05\/31\/co-founders-musical-reid-hoffman-san-francisco-ai-hologram\/\" data-post-id=\"d6ffce13-30cd-44cd-86d7-423f564d4eec\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a hip-hop musical about the tech industry<\/a>, sold out more than 40 consecutive shows during its six-week run last summer at ACT\u2019s Strand Theater.
