{"id":183196,"date":"2026-02-18T17:21:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T17:21:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/183196\/"},"modified":"2026-02-18T17:21:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T17:21:08","slug":"school-districts-begin-voting-on-new-millage-proposal-the-oakland-press","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/183196\/","title":{"rendered":"School districts begin voting on new millage proposal \u2013 The Oakland Press"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>School boards around Oakland County have begun deciding whether residents will vote on a countywide school enhancement millage proposal in August.<\/p>\n<p>The enhancement millage would be a 1.5-mill levy over six years that would generate $125 million in its first year. Over the six years it would generate an average of $781 per pupil for all students enrolled in public schools, public academies and charter schools.<\/p>\n<p>Districts enrolling more than 51% of all K-12 students in Oakland County must approve resolutions before the Oakland Intermediate School District takes action before March 30 to put the millage request on\u00a0 the Aug. 4 primary ballot.<\/p>\n<p>Oakland County currently has 172,388 students in public schools and academies.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon, Clarkston, Clarenceville, Huron Valley, Madison and Walled Lake districts have, approved the resolution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am in favor of offering our population a chance to vote,\u201d Walled Lake school board Trustee Marc Siegler said at their Feb. 5 meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The board approved the resolution 5-1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe public should decide what they want to do and where they should be at,\u201d said Walled Lake board President Stephanie Kaplan. \u201cIt shouldn\u2019t be myself deciding for the thousands and thousands of residents of Walled lake and Commerce Township. This is a community thing for each individual to decide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Across the state, almost half the student population live in counties with a dedicated school millage.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  size-article_inline lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"If approved, Oakland County would be the ninth in the state to implement a dedicated school millage.&#10;&#10;file photo \" data- src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_6176.jpg\" data-attachment-id=\"2682495\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They include Macomb, Wayne, Kent, Midland, Kalamazoo, Monroe, Muskegon and Ottawa counties. Those eight represent 600,000 students, or 44% of the total state student population.<\/p>\n<p>The millages range from .085-mills in Kent county to 1.9-mills in Wayne County, which has had a countywide millage in place since 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The Oakland County proposal would cost $150 per year on a home valued at $200,000. Funds received by the 27 county districts would be unrestricted and could be used for anything from salaries to construction projects to purchasing equipment.<\/p>\n<p>The millage would generate an estimated $5.5 million annually for Huron Valley students.
