MICHAEL GIGLIO

Oakland swept Smyrna to close regular-season play Tuesday night at Oakland, with the girls winning 53-27 and the boys taking the finale 66-54 as both teams head to postseason play.

In the boys’ game, Oakland had a 16-point lead, 34-18, at the half. The key was free throw shooting as the Patriots hit 15 of 16 in the first half while Smyrna made 1 of 10.

The boys’ game was marred by 47 fouls called and 62 free throws attempted by both teams. Oakland shot 27 of 35 at the charity stripe while Smyrna shot 12 of 27.

“We have been outscoring people, but we have to be able to play on the defensive end without fouling,” Smyrna coach Omar Smith said. “I told the guys we’re only guaranteed eleven more days. If we fool around, we’ll be taking up uniforms.”

Smyrna got the game within 11 points twice, but Oakland took the win — its seventh straight — to go to 10-15 on the year. Smyrna dropped to 13-10.

“The guys are starting to buy in, and they are learning my style and I’m learning them,” Oakland coach Tony Rutland said. “I like what I see on the defensive end.”

BOX SCORE

Smyrna (54): Yon Kinzer 27, Corey Daniel 8, Kaden Matthews 6, Carson Webb 3, Brylon Leake 3, Sucory Weathers 2, Javionne Buchanan 2, Za’rin Butler 2, AJ Wright 1.

Oakland (66): Josh Wiley 26, Yeshiyah Cobb 18, Lane Veron 7, Brennen Vanderbilt 5, Isaiah Atwater 4, Eli Bell 4, Matt Moore 2.

GIRLS

Oakland 53, Smyrna 27

The Oakland girls played solid defense in the first half and led wire to wire to go to 9-15 on the season. Smyrna dropped to 8-12.

Smyrna turned the ball over 14 times in the first half as its starting point guard was injured but will be ready when the postseason begins.

“The player I started at point guard today was put in a rough situation, but we will prep for our first postseason opponent, and it will be huge that we will be able to host the district tournament,” Smyrna coach Lonny Drayton said.

In the second half, Oakland extended the lead to as much as 22. KK Richardson led the Patriots with 13 while Makenya Sibert scored 12.

Both teams got to use their benches in the final quarter as reserves finished out the night.

“Even though we scored 53, I didn’t think we shot that well in the first half,” Oakland coach Scott Thomas said. “When we can get (KK) Richardson and Sibert going we’re pretty good, but we need to get in the gym and practice and get more shots up.”

BOX SCORE

Smyrna (27): Saniya Dalton 12, Trianna Booker 5, Brooke Trupiano 4, Jakyiah Herrera 3, Maliyah Graham 1, Amia Carter 1, Kennedi Steele 1.

Oakland (53): KK Richardson 13, Makenya Sibert 12, Laila Ogleton 7, Zariyah Benford 6, Callie Lowe 5, Marleigh Anderson 3, Ka’lai Henderson 2, Ryleigh Mullen 2, Arianna Holtby 2, Derriona Boney 1.

Smyrna’s Carson Webb dribbles the ball against Oakland’s 4 during their game on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Oakland.
