{"id":183315,"date":"2026-02-18T19:15:15","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T19:15:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/183315\/"},"modified":"2026-02-18T19:15:15","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T19:15:15","slug":"ou-announces-new-public-arts-competition-the-oakland-post","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/183315\/","title":{"rendered":"OU announces new public arts competition \u2013 The Oakland Post"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Monday, Feb. 7, 2026, the Office of the President launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oakland.edu\/spirit-of-place-public-art-competition\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spirit of Place Public Arts Competition<\/a> to fund a new sculpture, elevating Oakland University\u2019s position as a cultural destination. <\/p>\n<p>The funding for this competition was provided by a $250,000 gift from President Ora Hirsch Pescovitz and a $100,000 donation from the university.<\/p>\n<p>The final artwork will function as a permanent, tangible sign of Oakland University\u2019s commitment to public arts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This competition, as a part of the Cultural Ambassadors Initiative under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oakland.edu\/vision2030\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Strategic Vision 2030<\/a>, integrates the arts through campus, reflecting on a legacy of commitment to the common good. <\/p>\n<p>This installation will provide a powerful and visually compelling representation of OU culture.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The first round proposal for this competition is due at 2 p.m. on March 20, 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Spirit of Place Public Arts committee, composed of a wide range of individuals from different disciplines, ensures that the competition and artwork resonate with the various voices that compose OU\u2019s community.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Andrea Eis, a film professor at OU and co-chair of the competition, encourages the OU community to maintain involvement in the selection process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe feedback that the community gives will be greatly appreciated, so please let us know what you think,\u201d Eis said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the fall of 2026, semi-finalists will be coming to campus to present these projects. Eis encourages the campus community to engage with the participants during the competition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents, faculty, staff and members of the public will have the chance to hear the artists talk about their proposed artwork and to ask questions,\u201d Eis said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During late November to early December of 2026, the finalist will be selected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope this effort becomes a cornerstone of place-based creativity and a testament to the enduring spirit of our university,\u201d Mike Westfall, vice president of university advancement and co-chair of the competition, said.<\/p>\n<p>In August of 2025, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oakland.edu\/campus-master-plan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OU campus plan 2035<\/a> was completed.
