<\/p>\n SANTA CLARA, Calif. \u2014 Fast out of the gate, then a screeching halt, followed by steady precision and strategy, Tuesday’s non-conference tilt between Santa Clara University and San Jose State had a little bit of everything.

\nThe Broncos endured an early offensive onslaught and a 22-minute rain delay Wednesday, then came from behind for the second game in a row, breaking a tie with two runs in the seventh to beat the Spartans, 8-6, at Stephen Schott Stadium.

\nHOW IT HAPPENED<\/p>\n
\n\tSanta Clara (3-2) and San Jose State (2-2) combined for 10 runs on seven hits and 10 walks in the first two innings to start the afternoon with a 5-5 tie. The Spartans drew seven of those walks \u2013 six in the second inning alone. Dylan Jackson’s two-run, two-out single in the top of the first put San Jose State up 2-0. Santa Clara responded with four two-out runs of its own in the bottom half.

\n\tSCU’s first-inning rally was put on hiatus for 22 minutes as heavy rain covered the ballpark. When it finally cleared, Ben Cleary<\/a>, Johnny Luetzow<\/a> and Tate Medicoff<\/a> each drew walks to load the bases. Will Anderson’s<\/a> infield single and an SJSU throwing error tied the game at 2-2, and Hunter Fujimoto’s<\/a> first career hit \u2013 a full-count, two-run single \u2013 gave the Broncos a 4-2 lead.

\n\tThe teams’ first two turns at-bat saw three ties and two lead changes. San Jose State scored three times without a hit in the second inning to go up, 5-4. The Broncos came back with a single run in the bottom of the fifth on Max Ross’<\/a> RBI double to tie it at 5-5. Seven of the Broncos’ eight runs Wednesday came with two outs; three of the Spartans’ six did as well.

\n\tMedicoff looked to have hit a go-ahead home run in the bottom of the seventh. His towering sky-scraping fly ball carried all the way to the fence, but barely glanced off it and stayed in the ballpark, giving him a one-out double. Anderson drove home the eventual game-winning run four pitches later on an opposite-field single. Camden Sos<\/a> gave the Broncos more insurance two batters later with a two-out RBI single, scoring Anderson who earlier had stolen second.

\n\tSanta Clara pitchers struck out 12 Spartans Wednesday, two days after striking out 13 batters against California. Henry Stewart<\/a> recorded all his outs on four strikeouts, including three in the first inning. Trevor Banning<\/a> made his collegiate debut with 2 2\/3 shutout innings and four Ks. Tyler Alleman<\/a> earned his first career save with two strikeouts in two shutout innings of work to close out the game.

\n\tAnderson (3 for 4) and Ross (3 for 5) each had three hits and two RBIs to lead Santa Clara. Jake McCoy (2 for 4) and JC Osorio-Agard (2 for 5) had two hits apiece for San Jose State. Luca Staiano (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits in 1\/3 of an inning.

\n\t3: The Broncos’ pitching staff has recorded double-digit strikeouts in three consecutive games. That hasn’t happened since it did it four times in a row from April 20-27, 2024, against Sacramento State, Stanford and Saint Mary’s.

\n\t23: Thomas Ferroggiaro’s<\/a> reached base streak continued Wednesday, as he reached base twice on a single and a walk. He scored runs both times he was on base. His active hitting streak was also stretched to nine games.
