{"id":184187,"date":"2026-02-19T06:25:33","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T06:25:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/184187\/"},"modified":"2026-02-19T06:25:33","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T06:25:33","slug":"labor-department-launches-investigation-into-california-over-unemployment-fraud-claims-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/184187\/","title":{"rendered":"Labor Department launches investigation into California over unemployment fraud claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON (TNND) \u2014 The Department of Labor is launching an investigation into California&#8217;s Employment Development Department (EDD) based on allegations that billions of dollars in unemployment benefits were fraudulently distributed.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter sent to EDD, The Labor Department shared with state officials that it would soon be deploying a \u201cstrike team\u201d to the state, the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/18\/us-news\/feds-launch-investigation-into-california-unemployment-fraud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">New York Post <\/a>reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImmediately, we are engaging a specialized strike team to uncover any potential fraud or abuse and quickly moving to protect the American worker and taxpayers,\u201d Chavez-DeRemer told the New York Post. \u201cI look forward to restoring the California [Unemployment Insurance] program\u2019s integrity and financial health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigation in California comes amid heightened scrutiny in the Golden Gate State as conservative commentators like <a href=\"https:\/\/thenationaldesk.com\/news\/americas-news-now\/youtuber-nick-shirley-alleges-voter-roll-flaws-in-california-in-new-video-gavin-newsom-voter-registeration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nick Shirley<\/a> and Benny Johnson have posted videos alleging rampant fraud in the state administration of various government funded programs and voter rolls. Earlier this month, the Small Business Administration said it <a href=\"https:\/\/thenationaldesk.com\/news\/americas-news-now\/small-business-administration-says-billions-of-dollars-in-fraud-was-found-in-california-minnesota-kelly-loeffler-donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">found billions <\/a>of dollars of fraud in California.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinancial issues and potential fraud in California\u2019s unemployment insurance program will be fully examined,\u201d Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer told The Post in a statement. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe previous administration turned a blind eye toward failing Labor programs: This ends now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The state\u2019s Employment Development Department has been under scrutiny for years. In a 2023<a href=\"https:\/\/information.auditor.ca.gov\/pdfs\/reports\/2023-601.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> report, <\/a>the state auditor called the department a \u201chigh-risk agency,\u201d because it had &#8220;inadequate fraud prevention\u201d in place.
