SAN FRANCISCO, Feb 18 (Reuters) – California, Colorado and Washington are suing the federal government to force \u200cit to pay out grants approved by Congress for \u200cclean energy projects, the California attorney general’s office said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The \u200bTrump administration terminated some funding allocated under environmentally focused laws, including the Inflation Reduction Act, reflecting a broad effort to check support for wind, solar and other fossil-free power \u200csources while prioritizing \u2060increased U.S. oil production. States, including California, have been among the main foils to various \u2060Trump administration policies, launching dozens of suits. California Attorney General Rob Bonta on Tuesday told Reuters about plans to \u200bsue over \u200bchanges in vaccine policy and \u200ba plan to challenge \u200cthe rescission of a key Environmental Protection Agency finding, known as the endangerment finding, that was key to climate change regulation, for instance.<\/p>\n
The new suit responds in part to California’s loss of $1.2 billion in federal funding for \u200cthe Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen \u200bEnergy Systems, or ARCHES, Bonta \u200bsaid. The hydrogen plan \u200bwas intended to replace fossil fuels in \u200cutilities, public transit, trucking and \u200bports.<\/p>\n
Federal agencies must \u200bexecute laws, California said. “It’s as simple as Congress has the power of the purse, not the executive \u200bbranch, and Congress \u200calready appropriated this funding,” Bonta said in an \u200binterview on Tuesday, ahead of the announcement.<\/p>\n
