A year later, it finally opened, and would come to be known as “a hotel so grand they built a city around it.”

For over a century, the hotel has welcomed politicians, celebrities, and other VIP guests to its rooms, and over Super Bowl LX weekend earlier this month, it was a hub of activity. Perched atop Nob Hill, it offers sweeping, cinematic views of the city and bay, but more importantly, a sense of arrival. This is where heads of state, cultural icons, and business leaders have gathered to think, decide, and celebrate.

The library inside the Penthouse Suite at the Fairmont San Francisco. Brandon Barré Photography

How would you describe the guests and the vibe at the hotel?

At Fairmont San Francisco, our guests are wonderfully diverse, yet they share a common thread: curiosity, confidence, and an appreciation for places with soul. We welcome global business leaders, creatives, diplomats, cultural tastemakers, and multi-generational families—often all under the same roof—each drawn by the hotel’s history and its role as a crossroads of ideas.

The vibe is best described as quietly vibrant. There’s an unmistakable sense of gravitas, but never stiffness. Conversations happen organically—in the lobby, over a cocktail, during a meeting that turns into a celebration. It’s polished and purposeful, but also warm, inclusive, and distinctly San Franciscan. Guests feel they belong here, whether it’s their first visit or their fiftieth, and that sense of belonging defines the energy of the hotel.

What feeling about San Francisco do you hope to impart to guests?

We want guests to feel the city’s confidence and its humanity at the same time—the elegance of its past, the energy of its present, and the promise of what’s next. If they depart feeling inspired, grounded, and genuinely connected to San Francisco’s enduring spirit, then we’ve done our job.

A postcard of the hotel from 1920. Bettmann – Getty Images

What’s one thing about the hotel that you think first-time visitors will find surprising?

At Fairmont San Francisco, first-time visitors are often surprised by how intimate the experience feels. Given the hotel’s scale and storied history, many expect something formal or imposing—but what they discover instead is a genuine warmth and approachability. A great deal of that comes from our valued, tenured colleagues—many of whom have spent decades here and take immense pride in the hotel. Their deep sense of ownership and instinctive spirit of hospitality create an environment where guests feel truly welcomed and known.

Fairmont San Francisco’s lobby. VRX Studios

Despite being a landmark that has hosted world leaders and global icons for generations, the atmosphere remains personal and inviting. That balance—between grandeur and heartfelt service—is often what resonates most with guests, especially on a first visit.

What’s a local attraction that you always recommend?

I always encourage guests to begin by simply stepping outside and taking in Nob Hill itself. Walking the neighborhood offers an immediate sense of the city’s character—historic architecture, iconic cable cars, and views that remind you just how dramatic San Francisco truly is. From there, I often recommend riding the cable car down to the waterfront to experience San Francisco Bay—whether that means a stroll along the Embarcadero or simply pausing to appreciate the energy of the city meeting the water. It’s a classic San Francisco experience, but one that never feels cliché, and it captures the city’s blend of history, movement, and natural beauty in a very authentic way.

Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, and Diana Ross of the Supremes hopping on a cable car outside the Fairmont in 1966.
