Currently, five people have filed to run for District 4’s next supervisor. Over the next four months, Mission Local will ask each of these candidates a weekly question, and publish their answers.

On June 2, after less than a year with Alan Wong as their mayorally-appointed supervisor, Sunset voters can take to the polls and vote on whether they want to keep Wong on through the end of 2026, or go with someone else.

In the Nov. 3 general election, the voters of the Sunset will get the chance to weigh in yet again — this time concerning who will be District 4’s supervisor from Jan. 2027 through the end of 2030.

Presumably district residents will vote for the same person in both elections, but anything’s possible. It seems like just months ago that former District 4 Supervisor Joel Engardio was voted out of office in a recall election, because it was just months ago.

The next district supervisor, appointed by Mayor Daniel Lurie in November, was a music teacher and former pet shop owner with no prior political experience. After she turned out to have been poorly vetted and resigned, the mayor’s office released a shortlist of possible replacements, which included three of the five candidates in this race, Wong, Natalie Gee and Albert Chow.

Gee emerged as a front-runner, but her status as a legislative aide to a vocal critic of Lurie made her an unlikely pick. After other vetting issues emerged with more contenders on the mayor’s shortlist (Chow included) Wong was successfully appointed to the position.

This week’s question: What is your No. 1 issue in this election and what do you plan to do about it?
