SHAVER LAKE, Calif. (KFSN) — A winter storm in Fresno County is bringing plenty of rain and snow to the mountain communities.<\/p>\n
California Highway Patrol Officer Mike Salas says anyone trying to have an adventure in the current conditions must be prepared for anything.<\/p>\n
Chain control is in full effect at the bottom of 168’s 4-lane highway.<\/p>\n
“We are requiring every vehicle coming up, whether you are 4-wheel drive, All Wheel Drive, to carry those chains with you,” says Officer Salas. “If you don’t have chains at our checkpoint, we are going to turn you around.”<\/p>\n
If you’re prepared and make the drive up the mountain, you’ll see several feet of snow and, at times, windy conditions.<\/p>\n
Once you reach the community of Shaver Lake, you’ll see it transformed with several inches of new snow piled high and some businesses will be ready for you.<\/p>\n
Derin Leavitt works at Pub N Grub and was getting his car ready for the snowy roads while heading to his shift.<\/p>\n
“It’s always pretty surprising but you know, always expected,” said Leavitt.<\/p>\n
His advice… “Go slow in the snow, it’s that easy.”<\/p>\n
Cal Trans spokesperson Alex Aguilera says at least a dozen crews have been working around the clock for about a week, keeping roads drivable.<\/p>\n
He also reminds everyone to be cautious and vigilant:<\/p>\n
“Pack a go bag that can consist of extra food and water. Sometimes, even a flashlight or an extra change of clothes, because when we are traveling to these mountainous areas, especially during this time of year, we don’t know what we can expect.”<\/p>\n
CHP and Cal Trans officials say no roads in this area of Fresno County have been closed yet but that could change.<\/p>\n
