A San Jose State University student was found dead at Northstar California Resort on Thursday, marking the third skier killed in two weeks at the Tahoe ski slope.<\/p>\n
Colin\u00a0Kang, 21, went skiing around noon on Tuesday, according to a social media post from the SJSU Ski and Snowboard team. He was last seen near the Martis Camp Express, the post said, a ski lift which connects to the advanced Martis Trail.<\/p>\n
The Sierra has been battered by snowstorms this week, raising the risk of avalanches in the\u00a0backcountry. A large avalanche struck a group of 15 skiers near Truckee on Tuesday, killing eight.<\/a> Kang was not a part of that group.<\/p>\n The Placer County Sheriff’s office received a report of a possible missing person at around 11\u00a0p.m. Wednesday, the department said in a statement. The sheriff’s office did not announce his name, but spokesperson Elise Soviar confirmed that Kang was the missing person.<\/p>\n Deputies found\u00a0Kang’s car in the Northstar parking lot and began a search. The Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue Team was activated early Thursday morning, according to the sheriff’s department, deploying 15 skiers, a snowcat and two snowmobilers. Northstar Ski Patrol members also assisted in the effort.<\/p>\n The search party found\u00a0Kang’s body at 9 a.m. on Thursday. Authorities have not yet released additional information about his injuries. Northstar’s parent company, Vail Resorts, did not immediately return a request for comment.<\/p>\n “Based on the investigation, it was determined he had gone skiing and did not return as expected,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.<\/p>\n Kang’s death comes after Stuart McLaughlin<\/a>, 53, of Hillsborough, was killed at the resort Sunday morning. Nicholas Kenworthy,<\/a> 26, of Los Angeles, died after an accident on Northstar’s Martis Trail, considered one of the resort’s most challenging runs, on Feb. 12.<\/p>\n
