White Powder Sent to Oakland County GOP Office Likely Not Isolated Incident<\/p>\n

Bloomfield Township, MI \u2013 An envelope with white powder that came in the mail prompted the temporary closure of the Oakland County Republican headquarters in Bloomfield Township on Friday.<\/p>\n

Police got the call around 2pm.\u00a0 According to the Oakland County Republican\u2019s Facebook page, \u201cOut of an abundance of caution, staff immediately implemented established security protocols and contacted the Bloomfield Township Police Department. The scene was secured and appropriate safety procedures were followed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Senior Advisor Brian Szmytke thanked law enforcement and confirmed that the party is treating the matter with the utmost seriousness.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are incredibly grateful to the Bloomfield Township Police Department for their swift and professional response today. Their partnership has been instrumental as we continue to operate in an environment that, frankly, has become needlessly hostile,\u201d said Szmytke. \u201cOur security contractors and staff are pursuing this matter fully with local and federal authorities to ensure that whoever is responsible is identified and held accountable. No political organization or volunteer should have to face this kind of threat for engaging in the democratic process,\u201d Szmytke said.<\/p>\n

Bloomfield Township Police said \u201cWe do not believe this is an isolated incident and may be connected to other suspicious packages sent to GOP affiliations throughout Michigan. The Bloomfield Township Police Department is actively investigating this report in conjunction with our partners from Federal Law Enforcement. Anyone with any information is urged to contact the Bloomfield Township Police Department at 248-433- 7755.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened today is unacceptable and dangerous,\u201d said Chairman Vance Patrick. \u201cFor months, Democrats and their allies have been recklessly raising the temperature by labeling Republicans \u2018Nazis\u2019 and dehumanizing their political opponents. That kind of rhetoric has consequences.\u00a0 When you constantly portray your neighbors as evil, you should not be surprised when unstable individuals act on that poison. We will not be intimidated, and we will continue standing up for the people of Oakland County.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Augusta, Maine a similar envelope<\/a> with white power was received on Thursday afternoon, prompting a temporary closure and investigation of the Maine Republican Party Headquarters.<\/p>\n
