<\/p>\n SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Lafulafu Malepeai’s<\/a> one-out, three-run walkoff homer gave Sacramento State a 4-1 victory over Pacific on Saturday morning.\u00a0<\/p>\n With the score tied at 1-1, in the seventh, Erin Garcia<\/a> led off the inning with a walk, and Ava Medellin<\/a> reached on an error to put runners at first and second. With one out, up stepped Malepeai, who ambushed a first pitch over the center field wall to provide the victory. Of Sacramento State’s 12 wins, four have now come via walkoff variety.\u00a0<\/p>\n The Hornets conclude the Mustang Classic with a 4-0 record, which includes victories over Cal Poly, Manhattan and San Jose State. Sacramento State moved its record to 12-2, its best start to a season since 1995. In addition, the current seven-game winning streak is the program’s best since the 2016 season.<\/p>\n The Hornets are 9-1 away from home, including a 7-0 record on neutral fields. Sacramento State has not lost a game away from home since a Feb. 13 defeat at 26th-ranked Grand Canyon.<\/p>\n After a stretch of nine straight away from home, the Hornets will play six straight home games next week, beginning with another matchup with Pacific on Wednesday.<\/p>\n Hornet starter Alexa Ortiz<\/a>, and Pacific starter Justice Alcaraz were locked in a pitchers duel the first six innings, before Malepeai’s heroics. The senior outfielder provided two of the Hornets’ six hits, finishing 2-for-4 with a run, homer and three RBIs.<\/p>\n Sacramento State, which never trailed in the game, opened the scoring in the second when Jenna Birch<\/a> successfully laid down a bunt that allowed pinch runner Faith Epperson<\/a> to score from third. The Tigers tied the score at 1-1 in the fourth after a Hornet error.<\/p>\n Ortiz improved to 4-1 while tossing her third complete game. She allowed just two hits and one unearned run while striking out eight. The right-hander faced four batters over the minimum, both hits allowed were singles, and Pacific advanced just two runners past first base the entire way.<\/p>\n Saskia Raab<\/a> had another hit, and improved her hitting streak to a career-best eight games. Madi Mendoza<\/a>, Hailee Bustos<\/a> and Medellin also had hits for the Hornets. Medellin had a two-out double in the fourth inning in which Garcia was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first base.<\/p>\n The Hornets are back in action on Wednesday when they host Pacific at 2:30 p.m. The team will also host the Capital Classic next week at Shea Stadium from Feb. 27-March 1.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
