Manoah had a breakout 2022 season but struggled in 2023, leading to his designation for assignment by the Blue Jays. Now with the Angels, the 28-year-old right-hander has the most to prove on the roster as he seeks to return to his dominant form.

      Why it matters

The Angels have not had a winning record since 2015 and are in need of pitching help to complement their star-studded lineup led by Mike Trout. Manoah’s potential resurgence could be a key factor in the team’s efforts to return to the playoffs for the first time in over a decade.

            The details

Manoah was an All-Star and All-MLB First Team selection in 2022 after posting a 2.24 ERA and 5.8 WAR in nearly 200 innings. However, he struggled in 2023 and was ultimately designated for assignment by the Blue Jays. The Angels signed him to a one-year, $2 million contract, giving him an opportunity to regain his form in spring training. Manoah will compete for a spot in the Angels’ starting rotation, which also includes Yusei Kikuchi, Jose Soriano, Reid Detmers, Grayson Rodriguez, and Caden Dana.

The Angels’ spring training begins later this week.Manoah is expected to get several starts and relief appearances throughout late February and March to prove himself.
The players

        Alex Manoah

A 28-year-old right-handed pitcher who was an All-Star and All-MLB First Team selection in 2022 with the Toronto Blue Jays, but struggled in 2023 and was designated for assignment.

Mike Trout

The star center fielder for the Los Angeles Angels, who has not had a winning team to play for since 2015.

Got photos?
