Doris Matsui, or the challenger, Sacramento City Councilmember <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/opinion\/article312124588.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Mai Vang;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Mai Vang<\/a>, will win 60% of the delegates\u2019 vote this weekend, which is needed for the party\u2019s endorsement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But after Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi made a surprise appearance and endorsed her old colleague, Matsui, the Vang campaign was left scrambling with just seconds to spare to find someone to speak on her behalf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI love that some of you are here for another generation, that we have a mix, but it\u2019s important to have \u2026 experience to show the way,\u201d Pelosi said. \u201c(Doris) Matsui has been great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Former U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi endorses U.S. Rep. Doris Matsui\u2019s bid for re-election to Congress during a debate between Matsui and Sacramento City Councilmember Mai Vang on Saturday at the California Democratic Party state convention in San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>(JOS\u00c9 LUIS VILLEGAS\/jvillegas@sacbee.com)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">According to Vang supporters, they had to speak quickly with regional director Orlando Fuentes, who was running the debate, while Pelosi was speaking to ensure Vang was given equal time for an advocate to speak publicly on her behalf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Vang plucked her fellow councilwoman, Caity Maple, from the crowd to make a surprise endorsement; an announcement that was supposed to come later next week, Maple told me later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">After Maple\u2019s speech, Matsui and her supporters attempted to have another supporter speak for the 81-year-old incumbent, but Vang held firm that Pelosi had already done so, and Maple\u2019s speech had been the response.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Sacramento City Councilmember Caity Maple endorses Mai Vang during a debate between Vang and U.S. Rep. Doris Matsui on Saturday at the California Democratic Party state convention in San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>(JOS\u00c9 LUIS VILLEGAS\/jvillegas@sacbee.com)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Fuentes eventually just ended the debate and directed delegates to register their official vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Then the room exploded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As some delegates headed off to cast their votes, Matsui and Vang retreated to opposite sides of the room like they\u2019d finished a prizewinning match, while their supporters huddled around them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Matsui will not only need to keep all the votes she won in the pre-endorsement conference but will need to gain three percentage points if she hopes to win the California Democrats\u2019 official party endorsement. She was confident after the debate, when I asked if she thought she would.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But one delegate I spoke to, who didn\u2019t want to be named, said they were going to switch their vote from Matsui to Vang, and said it was Pelosi\u2019s speech that had convinced them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The advancing age of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/opinion\/article302708409.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:certain Democrats in Congress;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">certain Democrats in Congress<\/a> has been at the top of mind for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/opinion\/article311798614.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:voters across the nation;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">voters across the nation<\/a>. Matsui, who has served in the seat for the last two decades, is one of 14 octogenarians currently serving in the House of Representatives. Meanwhile, Vang, 40, has been campaigning on the idea that Sacramento needs a fresh voice in Congress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Matsui acknowledged the age difference between her and Vang in her opening remarks: \u201cI know some people say it\u2019s time for younger representation and I understand that,\u201d she said. It\u2019s not about clinging to power. Experience matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Even though Vang is unlikely to win the party endorsement, she could still block Matsui from getting it. Delegates will find out on Sunday during the official ratification of endorsements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe (Democratic) establishment is going to be the establishment,\u201d said Vang, directly after the debate. \u201cI didn\u2019t know that they were going to hand the mic over to a supporter. Then they came up to me and asked me, Is there any electives in the room that have endorsed you that can speak on your behalf?
