{"id":189591,"date":"2026-02-23T04:42:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T04:42:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/189591\/"},"modified":"2026-02-23T04:42:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T04:42:09","slug":"proposed-ca-bill-would-require-licenses-for-some-e-bikes-long-beach-post-news-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/189591\/","title":{"rendered":"Proposed CA bill would require licenses for some E-bikes \u2022 Long Beach Post News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This article was <a href=\"https:\/\/laist.com\/transportation\/proposed-ca-bill-would-require-licenses-for-some-e-bikes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">originally published by LAist<\/a> on Feb. 21, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Some electric bikes in California could soon require license plates under a proposed state bill aiming to address the\u00a0<a data-cms-ai=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facs.org\/for-medical-professionals\/news-publications\/news-and-articles\/bulletin\/2024\/julyaugust-2024-volume-109-issue-7\/electric-bikes-are-emerging-as-public-health-hazard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">rise in<\/a>\u00a0electric bike-related injuries.<\/p>\n<p>AB 1942 or the E-bike Accountability Act, would apply exclusively to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/codes_displaySection.xhtml?sectionNum=312.5.&amp;lawCode=VEH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">Class 2 and Class 3\u00a0<\/a>electric bikes.<\/p>\n<p>Class 2 bikes can be operated without pedaling until they reach a speed of 20 mph.<\/p>\n<p>Class 3 bikes reach a max speed of 28 mph; motor assist could only kick in with peddling.<\/p>\n<p>The bill would also require owners to carry proof of ownership and would direct the Department of Motor Vehicles to establish a registration process. It was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bauer-kahan.asmdc.org\/press-releases\/20260213-assemblymember-bauer-kahan-introduces-legislation-enhance-e-bike-safety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">introduced<\/a>\u00a0by Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan of Orinda in Contra Costa County earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>E-bike injuries spiked 18-fold between 2018 and 2023, according to state traffic data.<\/p>\n<p>The bill may be heard in committee March 16.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"This article was originally published by LAist on Feb. 21, 2026.
