1.\u00a0Fallout from East Coast blizzard hits LAX<\/a><\/p>\n

Dozens of flights between the East Coast and Los Angeles International Airport were cancelled Monday morning due to the blizzard that is pounding a large swath of the nation’s Eastern Seaboard.<\/p>\n

As of 4:30 a.m. Monday, more than 111 flights into and out of LAX were cancelled.<\/p>\n

At least 30 of those were flights to John F. Kennedy International in New York City, Newark Liberty International in New Jersey and Boston Logan International, according to FlightAware. Nearly 40 flights destined for LAX were cancelled from the same airports.<\/p>\n

The FlightAware Misery Map showed the greatest number of “Misery” flights were from the New York City area, followed by Boston and the District of Columbia.<\/p>\n

2. Crews recover bodies of 9 backcountry skiers days after California avalanche<\/a><\/p>\n

Crews recovered the bodies of nine backcountry skiers who were killed in a California avalanche four days ago, authorities said Saturday, concluding a harrowing operation hindered by intense snowfall.<\/p>\n

A search team reached the bodies of eight victims and found one other who had been missing and presumed dead since Tuesday\u2019s avalanche on Castle Peak near Lake Tahoe. The ninth person who was missing was found \u201crelatively close\u201d to the other victims, according to Nevada County Sheriff\u2019s Lt. Dennis Hack, but it was impossible to see them because there were white-out conditions on Tuesday when the others were located.<\/p>\n

At a news conference on Saturday, Nevada County Sheriff Shannon Moon praised the collective efforts of the numerous agencies who helped recover the victims, including the 42 volunteers who helped on the last day of the operation.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0Lakers unveil statue of Pat Riley before Celtics game<\/a><\/p>\n

Pat Riley took his place among Lakers greats such as Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jerry West and Kobe Bryant Sunday when his statue was unveiled at Star Plaza outside Crypto.com Arena.<\/p>\n

Riley, a scrappy player on the Lakers\u2019 legendary 1971-72 team that won an NBA championship and authored a league-record 33-game winning streak, is better known as the coiffed, well-dressed coach of the 1980s \u201cShowtime\u201d team that won NBA titles in 1982, 1985, 1987 and 1988.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe time has flown by, it really has,\u201d Riley said. \u201cOver the years, I regularly go back and I can recall each championship, the one play, the one moment,\u201d Riley said.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0Lunar New Year marked with parade in Chinatown<\/a><\/p>\n

Dozens of dragons and lions were unleashed Saturday on Los Angeles’ Chinatown as the 127th Annual Golden Dragon Parade hit the streets to celebrate the Year of the Horse.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of spectators watched as Mayor Karen Bass and other dignitaries passed by in classic convertible cars and watched local school marching bands and martial arts groups perform.<\/p>\n

This year’s theme was “Unity in the Community,” a nod to the diversity of Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

The parade and festivities, put on in part by the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, began at 1 p.m. Saturday on North Hill Street, went through Bernard Street and ended on Broadway at Temple Street. Street closures went into effect earlier in the day.<\/p>\n

For 18 years, Randal Broadhurst has worked with incarcerated youth and now also focuses on prevention in schools in the Sacramento area through his gang intervention program, or G.A.P.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we can stop them, you know, halt their progress from going down that path to criminal activity, then we\u2019ve done a great service to them and the community,\u201d Broadhurst said. \u201cAnd that typically works better than once they get into the [prison] system.\u201d<\/p>\n
