President Donald Trump escalated his push to raise tariffs without the Supreme Court\u2019s backing, announcing he would raise the 10% worldwide tariff\u00a0he announced after the nation\u2019s highest court ruled against him to 15%.<\/p>\n
Trump invoked Section \u200b122 of the Trade Act of 1974, allowing him to impose a maximum tariff of 15%. It can only remain in effect for 150 days, \u2060after which it would need authorization from Congress.<\/p>\n
\u201cBased on a thorough, detailed, and complete review \u200cof the ridiculous, poorly written, and extraordinarily \u200banti-American decision on Tariffs issued yesterday, after MANY months of contemplation, by the United States Supreme Court,\u201d Trump wrote in a Truth Social post, the worldwide tariff would be raised to 15%, \u201ceffective immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n
The move \u2060came after Trump lashed out at the Supreme Court \u200con Feb. 20 over \u200cwhat he called its \u201cdeeply disappointing\u201d decision to overturn the emergency tariffs that he imposed on countries around the world. \u2060The high court ruled\u00a0Trump doesn\u2019t have the congressional authority\u00a0to impose tariffs\u00a0under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act.\u00a0<\/p>\n
At a news conference \u200cafter the ruling, Trump said he \u200cwas \u201cashamed\u201d of some Supreme Court justices for \u201cnot having the courage to do what\u2019s right for our country.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI think their decision was terrible,\u201d \u2060he added. \u201cI think it\u2019s an embarrassment to their families, if \u200byou want to know \u2060the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n
The \u200bcourt struck down the tariffs with a 6-3 majority, including two justices Trump appointed \u2014 Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett. It marked the first time in Trump\u2019s second term that the \u2060conservative-dominated court has ruled against his sweeping use of presidential power.<\/p>\n
The case came to the Supreme Court after a group of small businesses, joined by \u2060more than a dozen states with Democratic attorneys general, sued the Trump administration over the tariffs, accusing the president of inappropriately stretching his power to \u201cregulate\u201d to unlawfully impose taxes.<\/p>\n
