Head coach Neill Collins has overseen roster decisions since Dunivant’s departure.

Holt replaces Dunivant, who accepted the sporting director role with New York City FC of MLS in December after playing a key role in securing Republic FC’s new stadium near downtown Sacramento. Dunivant helped facilitate Wilton Rancheria’s controlling interest in the club to help fund the stadium and worked with Sacramento officials to approve the project, which broke ground last summer.

Holt joined Sacramento as the franchise sought to raise its profile with its new $175 million stadium in the Railyards. Republic FC has long had its sights on joining MLS, with ownership continuing to push for more investment. The new venue is designed to expand from 12,000 seats to upwards of 20,000 to comply with MLS standards.

Sacramento also remained in contention for the new USL Premier league, planned to launch in 2028. The league is designed to compete directly with MLS, with similar player payrolls and stadium sizes. USL Premier will sit atop USL’s three-tier system, alongside the USL Championship (Division II) and USL League One (Division III), making the USL the country’s first professional sports league to feature promotion and relegation. The USL announced last month that Tony Scholes, chief football officer of the English Premier League, will become USL Premier’s president this summer.

In the meantime, Republic FC continued its pursuit of a second USL Championship title after winning its inaugural season in 2014. The club finished in the top five of the Western Conference in each of the past four years, including first in 2023, but has not advanced beyond the semifinals despite ranking among league leaders in player spending and attendance.

Republic FC made a splash signing last week by signing former MLS All-Star and Canadian national team midfielder Mark-Anthony Kaye after a first-round playoff exit last fall.

This story was originally published February 23, 2026 at 1:05 PM.

                Chris Biderman

                    The Sacramento Bee

Chris Biderman covers sports and local news for the Sacramento Bee since joining in August 2018 to cover the San Francisco 49ers.
