Various cultural clubs and organizations held their own Lunar New Year events and socials across the first week of the new year, which began Feb. 17.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">One such event was a celebration for T\u1ebft, or Vietnamese Lunar New Year. The event was co-hosted by the Vietnamese Student Association, the Southeast Asian Student Coalition and the office of ASUC Senator Sydnee Thy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThis is very nostalgic to me,\u201d said Mi Tang, Thy\u2019s chief of staff. \u201cGrowing up in San Francisco &#8230; when I went to school I only knew one other Viet person. I really found a sense of identity and sense of purpose here.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The event featured traditional Vietnamese games such as b\u1ea7u cua c\u00e1 c\u1ecdp, a game played with dice, and l\u00f4 t\u00f4, a variation of bingo. Attendees also played a trivia game with questions themed around Lunar New Year traditions with the opportunity to win red envelopes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAQAAAADCAQAAAAe\/WZNAAAAEElEQVR42mM8U88ABowYDABAxQPltt5zqAAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==\" alt=\"lunar3_Anabelle Fong_staff.jpg\" class=\"img-responsive lazyload full blur\" width=\"1793\" height=\"1155\" data- data-\/><\/p>\n<p>             <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/699d3076bc67d.image.jpg\" alt=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" loading=\"lazy\" height=\"129\" width=\"200\"\/><\/p>\n<p>                                    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailycal.org\/users\/profile\/Anabelle%20Fong\" rel=\"author nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anabelle Fong | Staff<\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">April Le, internal director of the Southeast Asian Student Coalition, painted her nails in an intricate red and gold design for Lunar New Year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201c(Painting my nails) makes me feel more connected to my roots,\u201d April Le said, mentioning Tippi Hedren, an American actress who helped Vietnamese Americans start nail businesses in California in the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Shayna Shanara, co-president of the Berkeley Indonesian Student Association, said she and other Muslim Indonesian students are celebrating Lunar New Year and Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting from dawn to dusk, at the same time. Shanara said she broke her fast with Chinese food at the club\u2019s evening social, which was also co-hosted by Thy\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe aim to have a lot of cultural events (such as) Eid (and) Lunar New Year,\u201d Shanara said. \u201cI feel like it\u2019s very important for us to celebrate those holidays together.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Chinese Student Association continued its 14-year tradition of hosting a Lunar New Year banquet, featuring performances from groups such as Cal VSA Lion Dance, Cal Wushu and Chinese dance group Fei Tian Dancers. Campus bands and ensembles, including the Nikkei Choral Ensemble and Ra-On, also performed songs in English, Chinese and Japanese.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The audience let out audible gasps as Cal Wushu performed a series of backflips, pulled out phone flashlights during campus band Ra-On\u2019s rendition of Taiwanese singer WeiBird\u2019s \u201cRu Guo Ke Yi\u201d and petted the VSA Lion Dance lions as they bobbed and weaved around the banquet tables.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The event sold more than 160 general admission tickets, according to Erin Li, a CSA executive officer. The banquet\u2019s menu featured egg rolls, bok choy, eggplant and fried rice catered by Flower Lounge, a Cantonese restaurant in Oakland.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cFor a Lunar New Year celebration, food is always a must-have,\u201d Li said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to campus senior An Le, a previous head coordinator with Cal VSA Lion Dance, lion dancing is performed during Lunar New Year to bring in luck and prosperity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Although the tradition originated in China, An Le said the team practices a hybrid of different regional styles, including those from Vietnam, Korea, Japan and Malaysia.
