{"id":191977,"date":"2026-02-24T22:00:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-24T22:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/191977\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T22:00:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T22:00:07","slug":"ask-chris-who-was-the-first-woman-architect-in-l-a","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/191977\/","title":{"rendered":"Ask Chris: Who Was the First Woman Architect in L.A.?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Designing women have been in L.A. since Victorian times but the first was not licensed until 1931<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 40% of today\u2019s architectural designers are female, but last century, they were an endangered species. \u201cOnly 1% of architects are women,\u201d Jean Driskel of the American Institute of Architects told the Los Angeles Times in 1968. \u201cThere are fewer than 20 in Southern California.\u201d That was around the time Fran Offenhauser was beginning her studies. \u201cWhen I applied first to architecture school in 1967, the doors were slammed shut,\u201d the Hollywood architect says. \u201cMy name being Frances, they thought I was Francis. California became the second state in the U.S. to require licensing in 1901, around the time L.A. ladies Ida F. McCain and Kate Lockwood (Squire) Nevins were advertising their design services in the phone book. Alden told the census man she was an architectural draughtsman. She crafted her own house in South L.A. and a mansion in Riverside. The Danish designer and a male partner built apartments through the 1920s.
