The Town is fresh off celebrating Black culture with last weekend\u2019s Black Joy Parade<\/a>, and this weekend features the final events of Black History Month. There\u2019s a family-friendly celebration at the East Oakland Youth Development Center in deep East. The African American Quilt Guild is hosting an event at the West Oakland Library for quilters, sewers, and craft enthusiasts. And the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir is offering a free show.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Celebration of Black history and culture at the East Oakland Youth Development Center<\/p>\n

The East Oakland Youth Development Center<\/a>, an organization that opened its doors in 1978 to provide Black and brown youth with job opportunities, counseling services, and other support, will celebrate Black culture at its HQ in deep East Oakland with local vendors, food, performances, and family activities.

Lit talk: \u2018Kitty Caterpillar\u2019<\/p>\n

Emmy-nominated television writers and children\u2019s media creators Annabeth Bonder-Stone and Connor White are visiting Oakland for the public launch of their new children\u2019s picture book, \u201cKitty Caterpillar.\u201d<\/a> The story follows a kitten who imagines becoming a caterpillar while exploring nature. Books will be available for purchase at the event.\u00a0

African American Quilt Guild of Oakland annual Black History Month Family Workshop<\/p>\n

Members of the African American Quilt Guild<\/a>, a group dedicated to preserving and celebrating African American quilting traditions<\/a>, are celebrating the culmination of Black History Month by making a quilt block. Everyone, regardless of age and experience, is welcome to participate. Space is limited and there will be a limited amount of quilting kits.\u00a0

\u2018A Joyful Walk Through Gospel\u2019 concert by the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir<\/p>\n

The Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, a diverse group of semi-professional Black gospel singers and singers of other ethnic backgrounds<\/a>, is putting on a show this weekend to celebrate American gospel music to close out Black History Month.

\nJohn Mayer tribute at the Sound Room <\/p>\n

Bay Area vocalist Amy D<\/a> and singer-songwriter-guitarist Ian Santillano<\/a> are teaming up for a one-night-only collaboration to commemorate the 20th anniversary of John Mayer\u2019s album \u201cContinuum.\u201d Artists Carl Nash (piano), Chris Balderas (bass), and David Aguiar (drums and vocals) will accompany the duo on stage. The 2006 album, featuring tracks such as \u201cGravity,\u201d earned Mayer Grammys for Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

Hot Ticket in The Town this week: Najee at Yoshi\u2019s<\/p>\n

Award-winning jazz saxophonist and flautist Najee<\/a> is bringing his New York sound to the Town with four back-to-back shows to support his new album, \u201cUnder the Moon Over the Sky.\u201d He will also play some fan favorites from his four-decade career.
