Scott Wiener on Monday introduced a proposal aimed at making it easier for his city and others across the state to create public electricity utilities.<\/p>\n<p>What happened: The San Francisco Democrat is amending his intent bill, SB 875, to include language that would strengthen public entities\u2019 eminent domain power over utilities\u2019 properties by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eminentdomainreport.com\/public-agencys-resolution-of-necessity-not-entitled-to-conclusive-presumption-when-using-eminent-domain-for-takeover-of-public-utility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">eliminating a carve-out<\/a> that creates a higher bar for governments to use eminent domain on utilities. It would also tighten the timeline that it takes for cities to obtain a valuation of their utility grid, a key step in taking a private utility public.<\/p>\n<p>Why it matters: The proposal represents a significant escalation in San Francisco\u2019s yearslong push to purchase its electricity grid from Pacific Gas &amp; Electric, <a href=\"https:\/\/subscriber.politicopro.com\/article\/eenews\/2026\/02\/23\/politico-pro-q-a-pacific-gas-electric-ceo-patti-poppe-ee-00791944\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">which has consistently opposed the idea<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor decades, San Francisco has been trying to get out of this toxic relationship,\u201d Wiener said during a Monday press conference.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"State Sen.
