Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) schools could see the elimination of hundreds of jobs Wednesday\u2014and parents are not happy about it.<\/p>\n
OUSD needs to reduce its budget by nearly $103 million for the upcoming year to maintain balance, and the district has stated that layoffs are necessary to achieve this goal.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, the OUSD board is expected to vote on which jobs must go.<\/p>\n
There is a proposal that calls for the elimination of 421 positions and the reduction of 144 more.<\/p>\n
Out of the 625 jobs on the line, many are in the central office, while others include support staff like school attendance clerks, literacy coaches and community school managers.<\/p>\n
The list doesn’t appear to contain teachers, nor are there any proposals to shut down or consolidate schools.<\/p>\n
The board must make a decision on job cuts before March 15, which is the last day layoff notices can go out in time for the start of the next school year.<\/p>\n
