What is a \u2018micro-escape\u2019?<\/p>\n
According to A Mission for Michael, a \u201cmicro-escape\u201d is generally known as a space within an urban environment where people can visit for a brief break from the day-to-day hustle to sit in greenery and calm.<\/p>\n
Dozens of parks, walkways, gardens and other spaces were considered as part of the nationwide poll.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople don\u2019t always need a weeklong vacation to reset \u2014 sometimes they just need 20 minutes somewhere green,\u201d said Anand Meta, executive director of A Mission for Michael. \u201cWhat stood out in this survey is how often the most restorative places aren\u2019t hidden or remote. They\u2019re right in the middle of city life \u2014 parks people walk through on their lunch break or pass on their way home. These spaces matter because they are accessible.\u201d<\/p>\n
Which California parks are the top \u2018micro-escapes\u2019?<\/p>\n
Three parks in California were included in the top 30 \u201cmicro-escapes\u201d nationwide, including one popular Sacramento space.<\/p>\n
East Sacramento\u2019s McKinley Park was ranked at No. 27 in the nation for getting away to nature in the middle of the workday. The poll lauded the park\u2019s famed rose garden and \u201cmature trees\u201d for providing a quiet, calming space.<\/p>\n
\u201cMcKinley Park offers a softer counterpoint to the government buildings and busier corridors closer to downtown,\u201d A Mission for Michael said in a news release. \u201cSpanning around 32 acres, the park is anchored by a small lake, looping walking paths, and one of the city\u2019s best-known rose gardens, which draws quiet foot traffic rather than crowds.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two Southern California parks were also included near the top of the list.<\/p>\n
Central Park in Pasadena was ranked second overall in the country, behind only Kanah\u0101 Beach Park in Kahului, Hawaii.<\/p>\n
The city park earned praise for its efficient use of its small space, as a \u201ccompact but steady patch of green in the middle of the city grid,\u201d according to the mental health organization.<\/p>\n
\u201cIts mature trees and open lawn create an immediate sense of shade and breathing room,\u201d A Mission for Michael\u2019s news release said. \u201cWalking paths trace the perimeter, benches line the edges, and the central lawn stays flexible \u2014 hosting everything from quiet afternoon reading to low-key community gatherings.\u201d<\/p>\n
Slightly further south, San Diego\u2019s Kate Sessions Memorial Park earned a No. 22 spot on the mental health group\u2019s list of \u201cmicro-escapes.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201c(Kate Sessions Memorial Park\u2019s) 79 acres of open hillside create physical distance from downtown\u2019s noise and density, replacing traffic and concrete with sweeping views of Mission Bay, the Pacific Ocean, and the skyline in the distance,\u201d the news release said. \u201cThe park\u2019s simplicity \u2014 broad lawns, scattered picnic tables, and unstructured walking paths \u2014 is part of its appeal.\u201d<\/p>\n
