REUTERS\/Daniel Cole  \u00b7 Reuters \/ Reuters    <\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">Last year, Trump tried to freeze hundreds of millions of dollars in federal \u200cfunds for the University of California, \u2060Los Angeles, which is part of the UC system, over pro-Palestinian protests, but a judge later directed that those be restored.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">On Tuesday, the Trump \u2060administration sued the University of California system, alleging discrimination against Jewish and Israeli employees at UCLA. The university says it has taken steps to combat discrimination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">Trump has attempted to freeze federal funding and \u200binitiated \u200bprobes against universities over pro-Palestinian protests against Israel&#8217;s assault \u200bon Gaza, transgender policies, climate programs \u200cand diversity initiatives, leading to concerns about academic freedom, free speech and due process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">While Trump&#8217;s attempts to freeze funds for U.S. universities have faced legal obstacles, schools have been preparing plans to deal with the uncertainty from such threats by the government. Last year, Harvard said it intended to issue hundreds of millions of dollars of taxable bonds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">The University of California said \u200cWednesday&#8217;s bond sale was a part of its regular \u200bissuance process. The offering document was posted this month \u200band the retail pricing process began \u200bon Tuesday before the federal lawsuit was filed, the university system added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">The \u200cUniversity of California system receives more than $17 \u200bbillion a year in federal \u200bsupport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">Trump has cast pro-Palestinian protests as antisemitic.
