{"id":195437,"date":"2026-02-26T21:53:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T21:53:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/195437\/"},"modified":"2026-02-26T21:53:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T21:53:07","slug":"long-beach-community-college-district-to-pay-18m-to-settle-adjunct-lawsuit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/195437\/","title":{"rendered":"Long Beach Community College District to pay $18M to settle adjunct lawsuit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Long Beach Community College District has agreed to pay $18 million to more than 1,450 part-time professors to settle a class-action lawsuit that alleged they were forced to work unpaid hours outside the classroom, grading papers and tests, meeting with students, preparing lessons and other duties.<\/p>\n<p>The settlement, which the district board quietly approved last month, still needs the judge overseeing the case to sign off. A hearing on the matter is scheduled for July 1 in Los Angeles County Superior Court. It\u2019s likely that Judge Stuart Rice will approve the deal. Last year, <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/edsource.org\/updates\/l-a-judge-communtity-college-adjuncts-are-entitled-to-pay-for-grading-planning-and-office-hours\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">he ruled that the part-timers,<\/a> commonly called adjuncts, were entitled to the pay they sought, writing he found \u201ca myriad of problems\u201d with the district\u2019s claims that its practices did not violate state law.<\/p>\n<p>The case has made \u201ca major impact throughout the state already,\u201d as some districts have begun negotiating contract terms to give adjuncts what they\u2019ve long sought \u2014 pay for time they spend prepping and grading, not just for class time, said the plaintiffs\u2019 lawyer Eileen B. Goldsmith, in an interview.
