The UDW shared that they endorsed Steyer for many of his platforms, including investments in In-Home Supportive Services\u00a0(IHSS) and childcare.<\/p>\n

While not in his prepared remarks, Steyer shared that he would support statewide bargaining\u00a0and close corporate tax loopholes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe whole point of my campaign is California is too expensive for the people of California\u00a0at this point,\u201d Steyer said.<\/p>\n
Gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer received an endorsement from a major California-based labor union on Wednesday. (KSWB\/KUSI)<\/p>\n Earlier this year, Steyer joined\u00a0San Diego Kaiser nurses<\/a>\u00a0on the picket line during their strike\u00a0regarding\u00a0short staffing.\u00a0Steyer added that he believes workers are constantly going on strike because California has become unaffordable\u00a0and that the state is at a \u201cbreaking point.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cSacramento works a certain way, and\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0not going to work that way anymore,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n Following these remarks, the crowd began chanting \u201cs\u00ed\u00a0se\u00a0puede.\u201d Created by labor leaders Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez, the phrase\u00a0translates to \u201cyes, we can.\u201d\u00a0The UDW was\u00a0co-founded<\/a>\u00a0by Chavez and other labor activists.\u00a0Steyer joined the chant.<\/p>\n UDW Executive Director Doug Moore said\u00a0following Newsom\u2019s terming out of office, Steyer is who they believe will be the best pick for governor.<\/p>\n \u201cMr. Steyer understands the system is rigged against working families and will fight for the change we need,\u201d Moore shared in a statement.<\/p>\n Months away from California\u2019s primary election, Steyer is still behind Democratic candidates like Katie Porter and Eric Swalwell.\u00a0All three of these candidates, including candidate\u00a0Betty Yee,\u00a0have visited San Diego during their campaign.<\/p>\n Most recently, Porter\u00a0visited<\/a>\u00a0the Tijuana\u00a0River and\u00a0announced she would\u00a0declare\u00a0a state of emergency if\u00a0elected.<\/p>\n Swalwell\u00a0shared\u00a0with\u00a0locals\u00a0that he is running to lower prices and protect Californians from ICE.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Yee has met with groups like Women of Color Roar and the Democratic Club of Carlsbad-Oceanside.<\/p>\n Recent Emerson polling shows Steyer at about 9%, and other\u00a0polls<\/a>\u00a0suggest the race\u00a0may be\u00a0much\u00a0tighter.\u00a0However, a majority of voters remain\u00a0undecided<\/a>.<\/p>\n At the California Democratic Party\u2019s recent convention,\u00a0no candidate<\/a>\u00a0was able to reach the threshold for party endorsement.<\/p>\n \u201cMy campaign\u00a0is\u00a0based on a sincere effort to create a California we can all be proud of,\u201d Steyer added.\u00a0\u201cWhere we continue to be innovative, entrepreneurial,\u00a0invent the\u00a0future,\u00a0and we do it and bring everybody along.\u201d<\/p>\n Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
