CRENSHAW, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — A new, family-owned restaurant in L.A.’s Crenshaw District took us to the Caribbean Island nation of Jamaica.<\/p>\n
Welcome to Potwah Jamaican Cuisine<\/a>, located off Slauson Avenue.<\/p>\n “It was destined for us to open a restaurant,” owner Raymond Blake said. “I’m a good cook, so what can I say?”<\/p>\n The food speaks for itself, with oxtail that falls off the bone, rice and peas, plantains, beef patties and jerk chicken.<\/p>\n Jerk refers to the way the meat is seasoned, smoked and grilled.<\/p>\n The classic recipe originated in Jamaica, featuring spices like onions, and bell and scotch bonnet peppers.<\/p>\n “We’re just trying to bring the culture and the authentic flavor to the U.S. so other people can enjoy our cooking,” Blake said.<\/p>\n My favorite was the brown stew chicken that paired perfectly with the fried dough balls Jamaicans call “johnny cakes.”<\/p>\n Plus, the newly created and heavily craved Rasta Pasta is a must-try.<\/p>\n Keeping true to Jamaican culture and the deep-rooted spirit of supporting your neighbors, the restaurant posts flyers promoting community events across L.A.<\/p>\n “Being that it is Black History Month, right? The Crenshaw District, they come out in their numbers and support us every day, day in, day out,” Blake said. “We are very appreciative of the community and the surrounding areas.”<\/p>\n Blake has been in America for 10 years, and has been the proud owner of Potwah Jamaican Cuisine for five months.<\/p>\n The restaurant is named Potwah because that is the name of their native, English-based Creole language.<\/p>\n Potwah Jamaican Cuisine is open six days a week and is closed on Tuesdays.<\/p>\n The restaurant is located at 2166 W Slauson Ave., in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n Thank you, Carmen, for the submission.<\/p>\n What’s your favorite local restaurant?
