<\/p>\nSAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) \u2014 City leaders said San Jose\u2019s \u201clast large encampment\u201d will be dismantled and cleared away by mid-April. The sprawling encampment, nicknamed \u201cThe Jungle,\u201d is on a city-owned parcel of land near the intersection of Story and Senter roads in Coyote Meadows.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, city staff members began notifying about 100 people who are currently living in the encampment that The Jungle will be cleared starting on April 15.<\/p>\n
\u201cNoticing includes in-person outreach on site, where interim housing will be offered, as well as the distribution of written materials in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese,\u201d the mayor\u2019s office wrote.<\/p>\n
Mayor Matt Mahan said, \u201cOver the last three years, we\u2019ve expanded shelter and interim housing faster than any other city on the West Coast. That work has allowed us to decommission our largest encampments so that we can restore public spaces for community use and connect people to the services they need to return to self-sufficiency.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cClearing Coyote Meadows is about balancing compassion with responsibility,\u201d said City Manager Jennifer Maguire. \u201cFor the next several weeks, our teams will be on site every day offering shelter, services, and support to help people move indoors, while also beginning the work to restore this important area along Coyote Creek.\u201d<\/p>\n
City leaders said demolishing the encampment will protect public spaces and the creek, as well as strengthen San Jose\u2019s \u201chealth, safety, and beauty\u201d for everyone.<\/p>\n
Fremont passes controversial homeless camping ban <\/a><\/p>\n San Jose will declare the area as a \u201cno encampment zone.\u201d<\/p>\n The recent opening of the Cerone Interim Housing site created additional interim housing capacity, allowing for placements for those forced out of the encampment.<\/p>\n Last fall, hundreds of homeless people were moved out of Columbus Park<\/a>.
