A teenager and a young man were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with a shooting that left a 14-year-old boy riddled with bullets, Long Beach police said Friday.<\/p>\n
Officers were dispatched about 12:50 p..m. Sunday to the 5300 block of Elm Avenue, where they found the 14-year-old boy suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper body, according to the Long Beach Police Department.<\/p>\n
\u201cOfficers rendered lifesaving medical aid, including administering chest seals and a tourniquet,\u201d according to an LBPD statement. \u201cThe boy was transported to the hospital in critical condition and is now in stable condition.\u201d<\/p>\n
Gang detectives responded and determined the victim was walking south on Locust Avenue when he was approached by a male suspect, according to the LBPD.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe victim attempted to flee, but the suspect pursued him on foot and fired several shots, striking the victim,\u201d police said. \u201cThe suspect then approached and pistol-whipped the victim. The suspect fled the scene on foot prior to officers\u2019 arrival.\u201d<\/p>\n
Detectives identified the alleged assailant as a 14-year-old Long Beach boy and arrested him in Lakewood on Monday. His name was withheld due to his age.<\/p>\n
Also arrested for his alleged involvement in the shooting and beating was 19-year-old Long Beach resident Jian Xavier Salas, who was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and being an accessory after the fact.<\/p>\n
His bail was set at $75,000, police said.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo child should ever be subjected to any form of violence, and no one should ever be involved in committing such a brazen and heartless act,\u201d said Long Beach Chief of Police Wally Hebeish. \u201cThe attempted murder of a 14-year-old by another 14-year-old is both tragic and disheartening. I am incredibly grateful for the immediate medical aid provided by our responding officers. Their heroic efforts undoubtedly saved this young man\u2019s life.<\/p>\n
\u201cFurther, through their efforts, detectives arrested two suspects within 24 hours, reinforcing our commitment to stopping all forms of violence in our community,\u201d Hebeish said.<\/p>\n
Detectives presented their case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney\u2019s Office on Monday for filing consideration.<\/p>\n
