<\/p>\nANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) \u2014 Joel Quenneville became the second coach in NHL history to win 1,000 games with the Anaheim Ducks’ 6-5 comeback victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n
Quenneville joined Scotty Bowman in an exclusive hockey club with a milestone win in the Ducks\u2019 first game back from the Olympic break.<\/p>\n

Cutter Gauthier scored the tiebreaking goal with 1:14 to play for the Ducks, who erased a pair of two-goal deficits. Leo Carlsson had a goal and two assists in his first appearance since Jan. 10 for the Ducks, who have won six straight home games and 10 of 12 overall to leapfrog the Oilers into second place in the Pacific Division.<\/p>\n
Zach Hyman and Evan Bouchard scored late in the second period to put the Oilers ahead, but Carlsson and Olen Zellweger scored early in the third to even it again for Anaheim.<\/p>\n
Rookie Matt Savoie then converted a rebound late in a power play for his 10th career goal, but Beckett Sennecke answered 46 seconds later with a slick wrist shot for his 19th goal \u2014 tops among NHL rookies.<\/p>\n
Gauthier then converted a rebound of Carlsson’s shot, setting off a wild celebration inside a sold-out Honda Center.<\/p>\n
Jack Roslovic and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored for Edmonton. Connor McDavid had two assists, giving the Olympic silver medalist an NHL-best 98 points in 59 games.<\/p>\n
Ian Moore and Alex Killorn scored for the Ducks, and Lukas Dostal made 22 saves.<\/p>\n
Tristan Jarry made 20 saves before getting pulled for Connor Ingram after Sennecke’s tying goal with 13:21 to play.<\/p>\n
Carlsson was outstanding in his return to the Ducks\u2019 lineup after missing the final 11 games before the break with a thigh injury that kept him out of the Olympics.<\/p>\n
Mikael Granlund didn\u2019t play for Anaheim after captaining Finland to bronze in Milan. None of the Oilers\u2019 Olympians sat out as they opened a three-game California road trip.<\/p>\n

(AP Photo\/Gregory Bull)<\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 The Trump administration on Friday ordered all U.S. agencies to stop using Anthropic\u2019s artificial intelligence technology and imposed other major penalties, escalating an unusually public clash between the government and the company over AI safety.<\/p>\n President Donald Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and other officials took to social media to chastise Anthropic for failing to allow the military unrestricted use of its AI technology by a Friday deadline, accusing it of endangering national security after CEO Dario Amodei refused to back down over concerns the company’s products could be used in ways that would violate its safeguards.<\/p>\n \u201cWe don\u2019t need it, we don\u2019t want it, and will not do business with them again!\u201d Trump said on social media.<\/p>\n Hegseth also deemed the company a \u201csupply chain risk,\u201d a designation typically stamped on foreign adversaries that could derail the company\u2019s critical partnerships with other businesses. <\/p>\n In a statement issued Friday evening, Anthropic said it would challenge what it called an unprecedented and legally unsound action \u201cnever before publicly applied to an American company.\u201d <\/p>\n Anthropic had said it sought narrow assurances from the Pentagon that its AI chatbot Claude would not be used for mass surveillance of Americans or in fully autonomous weapons. The Pentagon said it was not interested in such uses and would only deploy the technology in legal ways, but it also insisted on access without any limitations.<\/p>\n \u201cNo amount of intimidation or punishment from the Department of War will change our position on mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons,\u201d the company said. \u201cWe will challenge any supply chain risk designation in court.\u201d<\/p>\n The government\u2019s effort to assert dominance over the internal decision-making of the company comes amid a wider clash over AI\u2019s role in national security and concerns about how increasingly capable machines could be used in high-stakes situations involving lethal force, sensitive information or government surveillance.<\/p>\n Hours after its competitor was punished, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced on Friday night that his company struck a deal with the Pentagon to supply its AI to classified military networks, potentially filling a gap created by Anthropic\u2019s ouster.<\/p>\n But Altman said that the same red lines that were the sticking point in Anthropic\u2019s dispute with the Pentagon are now enshrined in OpenAI\u2019s new partnership.<\/p>\n \u201cTwo of our most important safety principles are prohibitions on domestic mass surveillance and human responsibility for the use of force, including for autonomous weapon systems,\u201d Altman wrote, adding that the Defense Department \u201cagrees with these principles, reflects them in law and policy, and we put them into our agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n Altman also said he hopes the Pentagon will \u201coffer these same terms to all AI companies\u201d as a way to \u201cde-escalate away from legal and governmental actions and toward reasonable agreements.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump said Anthropic made a mistake trying to strong-arm the Pentagon. He wrote on Truth Social that most agencies must immediately stop using Anthropic’s AI but gave the Pentagon a six-month period to phase out the technology that is already embedded in military platforms.<\/p>\n \u201cThe United States of America will never allow a radical left, woke company to dictate how our great military fights and wins wars!\u201d he wrote in all caps.<\/p>\n Months of private talks exploded into public debate this week and hit a stalemate when Amodei said his company \u201ccannot in good conscience accede\u201d to the demands.<\/p>\n Anthropic can afford to lose the contract. But the government’s actions posed broader risks at the peak of the company\u2019s meteoric rise from a little-known computer science research lab in San Francisco to one of the world\u2019s most valuable startups.<\/p>\n The president\u2019s decision was preceded by hours of top Trump appointees from the Pentagon and the State Department taking to social media to criticize Anthropic, but their complaints posed contradictions.<\/p>\n Top Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said Anthropic\u2019s unwillingness to go along with the military\u2019s demands was \u201cjeopardizing critical military operations and potentially putting our warfighters at risk.\u201d Hegseth said the Pentagon \u201cmust have full, unrestricted access to Anthropic\u2019s models for every LAWFUL purpose in defense of the Republic.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump’s social media post said the company \u201cbetter get their act together, and be helpful\u201d during the phase-out period or there would be \u201cmajor civil and criminal consequences to follow.\u201d<\/p>\n However, Hegseth\u2019s choice to designate Anthropic a supply chain risk uses an administrative tool that has been designed for companies owned by U.S. adversaries to prevent them from selling products that are harmful to American interests.<\/p>\n Virginia Sen. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, noted that this dynamic, \u201ccombined with inflammatory rhetoric attacking that company, raises serious concerns about whether national security decisions are being driven by careful analysis or political considerations.\u201d<\/p>\n The dispute stunned AI developers in Silicon Valley, where venture capitalists, prominent AI scientists and a large number of workers from Anthropic\u2019s top rivals \u2014 OpenAI and Google \u2014 voiced support for Amodei\u2019s stand in open letters and other forums.<\/p>\n The moves could benefit OpenAI’s ChatGPT as well as Elon Musk\u2019s competing chatbot, Grok, which the Pentagon also plans to give access to classified military networks. It could serve as a warning to Google, which has a still-evolving contract to supply its AI tools to the military.<\/p>\n Musk sided with Trump\u2019s administration, saying on his social media platform X that \u201cAnthropic hates Western Civilization.\u201d Altman took a different approach, expressing solidarity with Anthropic’s safeguards and opposing the government’s \u201cthreatening\u201d approach while also working to secure OpenAI’s deal with the Pentagon. It marked the latest twist in OpenAI’s longtime and sometimes acrimonious rivalry with Anthropic, which was founded by a group of ex-OpenAI leaders in 2021.<\/p>\n Retired Air Force Gen.
