Check out the guide\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/artguidesf\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram account<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sfartguide.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>At the Museums<\/p>\n<p>As you can see, lots of great exhibits close at the end of today, so it is time to make it a Sunday of museums. <\/p>\n<p>To artists: the city is launching its competition for the 2027 Art on Market Street Poster Series. From the city\u2019s website: \u201d The 2027 Program will feature the work of four artists\/artist teams with each series on view for a period of three months\u2026\u201d You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfartscommission.org\/find-opportunities\/calls-for-artists\/2027-art-market-street-poster-series-market-street-next-175\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">learn more here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>To art supporters, there are donations to be made and f\u00eates to attend:<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a difficult time for many of the city\u2019s museums and cultural centers. The Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts has <a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2026\/01\/sf-mission-cultural-center-latino-arts-mayor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">suspended operations.<\/a> City Hall promises action, but in the meantime, it\u2019s a significant loss of children\u2019s programming, exhibits, and events. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.missionculturalcenter.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">donate here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.famsf.org\/visit\/legion-of-honor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Legion of Honor Museum<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>This is the last day to see  \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.famsf.org\/exhibitions\/manet-morisot\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Manet and Morisot<\/a>.\u201d On Monday, it will be gone!<\/p>\n<p>Julie Zigoris <a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2025\/10\/legion-of-honors-manet-morisot-show-reveals-a-potent-creative-pair\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">writes<\/a> that the exhibit \u201cwill give museum-goers the opportunity for the first time to understand how deeply the two French painters were in conversation with one another.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a wonderful exhibit. Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Prentis Cobb Hale Jr.<a class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_button-prev swiper-button-prev swiper-button-white\" role=\"button\"\/><a class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_button-next swiper-button-next swiper-button-white\" role=\"button\"\/><a aria-label=\"Pause Slideshow\" class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_button-pause\" role=\"button\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The exhibit includes 30 drawings and prints from 16th-century Venice  \u2013 landscapes and figure studies \u2013 from such artists as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.famsf.org\/art-finder?artist=155\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Giovanni Battista Tiepolo<\/a> (1696\u20131770), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frick.org\/art\/artists\/rosalba\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rosalba Carriera<\/a> (1673\u20131757) and Canaletto (1697\u20131768).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.famsf.org\/exhibitions\/ferlinghetti-san-francisco\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ferlinghetti for San Francisco<\/a>\u201d draws from the museum\u2019s collection of prints, etchings and lithographs. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/books\/article\/Lawrence-Ferlinghetti-s-indelible-image-3886925.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Here<\/a> is a 2012 profile from SFGate of the poet<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/books\/article\/Lawrence-Ferlinghetti-s-indelible-image-3886925.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">,<\/a> artist, activist and founder of City Lights Book Store. The show is open until July 19, 2026. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.famsf.org\/exhibitions\/ferlinghetti-san-francisco\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ferlinghetti<\/a> died in 2021, but what a life. Even before arriving in San Francisco, he had earned a master\u2019s degree from Columbia University and a doctorate from the Sorbonne. <\/p>\n<p>If you get into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.famsf.org\/exhibitions\/ferlinghetti-san-francisco\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ferlinghetti<\/a>\u2018s history, visit the Counter Culture Museum, City Lights Book Store and the Beat Museum.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"531\" height=\"640\" alt=\"A black and white sketch of a boat with several abstract human figures inside and a sail marked with &quot;25&quot; on a white background, reminiscent of art found in museums. It is at the museum\u2019s venue at  835 Larkin St and runs every Friday and Saturday at 7:00 p.m. You can get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tenderloinmuseum.org\/the-comptons-cafeteria-riot-play\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tickets here.<\/a>   Chris Carlsson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foundsf.org\/Poverty,_Social_Isolation,_Transsexuality\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">writes about the 1966 riots <\/a>and resistance on FoundSF, a great resource for history.   <\/p>\n<p>The San Francisco Chronicle wrote about the Tenderloin Museums\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sf\/article\/tenderloin-museum-art-neon-20159235.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">planned expansion<\/a> to 10,000 square feet from 3,000, adding a room for San Francisco\u2019s neon history, including a sign from Hunt\u2019s Donuts, once based in the Mission District and known as the \u201cepicenter of crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is a lot more going on at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tenderloinmuseum.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tenderloin Museum<\/a>, including the permanent collection that explores the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tenderloinmuseum.org\/permanent-collection\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">neighborhood\u2019s history<\/a> and upcoming events, such as a walking tour focused on the area\u2019s LGBTQIA+ history. Other walking tours <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tenderloinmuseum.org\/tlhistorytour\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">are listed here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/asianart.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Asian Art Museum<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEchoes in the Small Mountain: Park Dae-sung and the West Coast\u201d is open until July 26. <\/p>\n<p>Dae-sung (b. 1945) is \u201ccredited with reinventing the techniques of traditional Korean ink painting,\u201d according to the museum\u2019s website. Photo courtesy of the Asian Art Museum <\/p>\n<p>You will also see cutting-edge claywork from Japan in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/scl\/fo\/od6u2dzah676nly0ampsw\/AB90nYJOBuZgp9S3ZJYANZQ?rlkey=ngqanortxlkek6js0ni4gk22w&amp;st=p266gh49&amp;dl=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">New Japanese Clay<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The museum has a series, \u201cTakeout Tuesdays,\u201d where you can meet online to talk about a piece of art with <a href=\"https:\/\/calendar.asianart.org\/takeout-tuesdays\/?utm_source=Asian+Art+Museum+E-Mail+List&amp;utm_campaign=7aef3f954f-2024_1_3_Marketing_What%27s_Happening_January_2025&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_-7aef3f954f-191472965\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">docents and others.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>General admission is free on the first Sunday of every month \u2013 yes, today\u2013  and the special exhibitions are discounted. The exhibit features more than 100 artworks created over three decades. KAWS (Brian Donnelly) began painting graffiti in Jersey City and Manhattan, but in 1996 received his BFA in illustration from the School of Visual Arts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2025\/11\/review-kaws-eyeless-at-sfmoma\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">We sent Charles Lewis III <\/a>to take a look. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn his younger days, Donnelly would snatch subway advertisements, integrate his own characters and then replace the advertisements, making it seem as if his designs were always a part of the image,\u201d Lewis writes. Miranda on the development of the Arts of Indigenous America galleries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.famsf.org\/exhibitions\/leilah-babirye\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Leilah Babirye: We Have a History<\/a>\u201d is the Ugandan artist\u2019s first solo show in the United States. It closes May 26, 2026, Babirye creates sculptures in ceramic, wood and discarded objects.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know her work, but am excited to get to know it. Here is an excellent introductory video with Babirye and the curator of SFMOMA\u2019s African collection, Natasha Becker.
