SAN JOSE, Calif. \u2014 The Cal Poly women\u2019s tennis team captured its fifth straight victory on Saturday, taking down San Jose State 5-2 at the Spartan Tennis Complex.<\/p>\n
The Mustangs, ranked No. 64 in the country, got off to a scorching start against the Spartans (5-3), winning all three doubles matches. Juniors Candela Aparisi and Natalie Lynch grabbed the first victory, winning 6-1 at the No. 2 spot to improve 6-2 as a tandem this season. Redshirt junior Amy Leather and true freshman Tia Bonita Jakupovic-Kljako clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 3, and senior Kennedy Buntrock and sophomore Jessica MacCallum completed the doubles sweep with a 6-4 victory at No. 1, moving to 4-2 on the year.<\/p>\n
In singles, senior Alexandra Ozerets continued her sensational start to the season by securing a dominant 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4 to give Cal Poly a 2-0 lead. She improved to 7-2 on the year with the triumph and it was her fifth straight victory. The win also moved her into a tie with Carol Erickson (2004-07) for No. 2 on Cal Poly\u2019s all-time list for dual singles victories with 51. She is one victory away from tying the school record (52) Peyton Dunkle set last season.<\/p>\n
MacCallum made it 3-0 with a win in straight sets at No. 2, 6-3, 6-2. The Spartans earned a win at No. 6 to cut Cal Poly\u2019s lead to 3-1, but then Aparisi sealed the dual victory for the second straight match with a 6-2, 7-5 triumph at No. 3. It was her fifth straight win and helped her improve to 6-3 on the season.<\/p>\n
Buntrock captured the final singles victory of the day for the Mustangs with a thrilling comeback win at No. 1. After dropping the first set 6-2, she won the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-2), and then won a super tiebreaker in the third, 10-3, to complete the come from behind victory. She moved to 7-1 on the year.<\/p>\n
