This is not the interior of some recently excavated greasy spoon from the \u201cMad Men\u201d era \u2014 it\u2019s the interior at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldenettediner.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Goldenette (opens in new tab)<\/a>, a gleaming, week-old diner on Polk Street that radiates the color of sunshine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">Along with <a href=\"https:\/\/chickenfriedpalace.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Chicken Fried Palace (opens in new tab)<\/a> in the Mission and <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2026\/01\/06\/hamburguesa-bar-open-soma-dive\/\" data-post-id=\"5c812915-d916-495d-bb38-44c97373f6c8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hamburguesa Bar<\/a> in SoMa, it\u2019s part of a trio of retro-inspired food and beverage spots that have opened in San Francisco in the past three months, all of which sport decor that harkens back to the era of blue plate specials and endless cups of coffee in a vinyl booth. They join a handful of other nostalgia-inducing projects that have debuted in the past five years, including Midwestern-style Crocker-Amazon bar <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/01\/24\/halfway-club-james-beard-awards\/\" data-post-id=\"61773399-dc9f-432c-af80-ba086b35424a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Halfway Club<\/a> and the whimsical, Michelin-starred North Beach restaurant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hildaandjessesf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Hilda and Jesse (opens in new tab)<\/a>. Hamburguesa Bar is a <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2026\/01\/06\/hamburguesa-bar-open-soma-dive\/\" data-post-id=\"5c812915-d916-495d-bb38-44c97373f6c8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">burger joint<\/a> with a full liquor license, while Goldenette is largely Tex-Mex. Chicken Fried Palace\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/11\/20\/chicken-fried-palace-diner-mission-stowaway-mission\/\" data-post-id=\"0abf1f1e-7c73-446f-a621-c923a6cf86d7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">culinary ambitions<\/a> run to salt cod pancakes and smoked trout. As it happens, all serve milkshakes. But what really ties them together is the kitschy vibes \u2014 the feeling of stepping into the 20th century for a leisurely breakfast. Unlike many old-school diners, none is open 24 hours, but each is comfortable and spacious, with booth and counter seating. Above all, they reject the trend toward depersonalized, QR-code-driven service, favoring an atmosphere where patrons might want to linger a bit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">\u201cIt\u2019s all face-to-face,\u201d Goldenette co-owner Eddie Naser says. \u201cYou get to talk to the repeats. People love that about a diner.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We had to adapt\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">The recent arrivals mark a reversal of fortune for the city\u2019s diner culture, which had fallen into the doldrums. Yes, HBO\u2019s gay hockey show \u201cHeated Rivalry\u201d sent a new generation flocking to St. Francis Fountain to discover the <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2026\/01\/17\/heated-rivalry-tuna-melt-san-francisco-diners\/\" data-post-id=\"390cc827-90fb-40fe-b884-cb7ef21711a8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tuna melt<\/a>. But the Embarcadero\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/06\/04\/fog-city-diner-closes\/\" data-post-id=\"56196208-70ec-48f3-b27b-448047633326\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fog City<\/a> and Bayshore Boulevard\u2019s 24-hour <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2024\/07\/30\/silver-crest-donut-shop-closes\/\" data-post-id=\"f239a4de-7df9-4f0c-b4b4-eb0ddc2ec5e8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Silver Crest<\/a> have closed, while <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2023\/02\/08\/iconic-san-francisco-coastal-diner-may-never-reopen\/\" data-post-id=\"04f07dd2-a782-47e9-82fa-140a131dd789\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Louis\u2019 Restaurant<\/a> near Lands End never reopened after the pandemic. In Mission-Bernal, <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2024\/03\/23\/secret-diner-open-for-business\/\" data-post-id=\"8704737e-aa7e-49a1-a2c1-6367d176b6bf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Al\u2019s Good Food<\/a> is struggling to make its existence known. And over in the Castro, <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/03\/03\/orphan-andys-castro-diner-for-sales\/\" data-post-id=\"bd065f1d-196d-4e7d-8664-15cb80a91385\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Orphan Andy\u2019s<\/a> was put up for sale for a song, its hours drastically pared back.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">Goldenette is a partnership between Naser and local <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/02\/03\/san-francisco-peak-smash-burger\/\" data-post-id=\"f4738198-7573-4924-abce-896a4a7acb80\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">burgermeister<\/a> Wes Rowe. Together, they transformed a former outpost of the breakfast-centric mini-chain Toast, replacing its omelets and scrambles with bread-pudding French toast and a bang-up sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich. Naser started Toast in 2005, eventually expanding to four eateries citywide, of which only the location in West Portal, where he was born and raised, remains. He has no plans to change it, noting that business is brisk. \u201cIt\u2019s more of a traditional neighborhood, and I have a lot of support,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">Naser and Rowe made other changes to keep pace with evolving tastes. Toast closed after the lunch rush; Goldenette is open until 9 p.m., something Naser hopes will help rejuvenate Polk Street. Some loyal, omelet-loving customers \u2014 who have been regulars since the days when it was Bob\u2019s Diner, run by the same Bob as nearby Bob\u2019s Donuts \u2014 balked at the refresh. \u201cThey were asking, \u2018Where\u2019s the jelly on the table? Where\u2019s the Sweet\u2019N Low?\u2019\u201d Naser says. \u201cBut we had to adapt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Comfort food and an easygoing vibe<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">Just because a restaurant is retro doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s a diner. Hamburguesa Bar co-owner Lane Ford notes that his establishment is first and foremost a bar, with a full liquor license and a service style based on a Middle America luncheonette. That means it\u2019s open from noon to midnight (no breakfast items), as opposed to Goldenette\u2019s 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">But comfort foods dominate. The Hatch chile cheeseburger \u2014 which is not a smashburger but a thick, juicy patty Ford calls a \u201ctavern burger\u201d \u2014 is the best seller, along with fries cooked in duck fat and slices of rum cake. Prices are on the affordable-for-SF side: You can walk in and order a burger, fries, and a pint of draft beer served in a frosty glass for around $30 with tax and tip.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">The interior matches. Hamburguesa Bar has a drop ceiling, with tacky velvet paintings and beer signs on the faux wood-panelled wall. It feels like a fully formed dive, right out of the gate \u2014 not in the sense of a grungy bathroom covered in years\u2019 worth of stickers, but a place that\u2019s always been there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">Ford, a New Orleans native who grew up in Oklahoma, has memories of going with his father to a local luncheonette where service was gruff. (He recalls an older patron who was taking too long during the lunch rush. The bartender gave her five minutes to finish her coffee and go.) Ford isn\u2019t looking to give slow eaters the heave-ho, but in the era of slop-bowl chains \u2014 \u201ckiosk places,\u201d he sniffs \u2014 even tough love feels human. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/googie-architecture-of-the-space-age-122837470\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Googie (opens in new tab)<\/a>-style metal panels that chef-owner Seth Stowaway inherited from previous occupant Wes Burger \u2019N More \u2014 another Rowe project \u2014 are now painted in pastel pink, blue, and white. Four-person wood tables have been replaced with tan upholstered booths where patrons dive into bowls of grits and patty melts on Pullman toast.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">Stowaway\u2019s core concept of \u201cchicken-fried X\u201d \u2014 where X could be chicken, steak, mushrooms, or smoked trout, smothered in one of three Southern-style sauces \u2014 has been further diner-ized since its November debut. The mochi-style batter, with its distinct texture, has been discarded in favor of a traditional, flour-based dredge \u2014 the kind found at truck stops everywhere.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body text-left\">For Stowaway, who earned a Michelin star at his live-fire restaurant Osito, this doesn\u2019t feel like dialing back his ambitions. Rather, it brings Chicken Fried Palace closer to his initial goal of feeding people good food in a lighthearted place. \u201cIt\u2019s not about proving something is super cool,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s about giving people what they want.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Chile relleno burritos served on pale-pink plates.
