Even before Biggie and Tupac, there has long been an East Coast versus West Coast rivalry.<\/p>\n

Florida and California could drop some banger diss tracks on one another as each side has its own unique appeal.<\/p>\n

For today, we’ll skip the part about how much of the West Coast<\/a> has chilly waters and focus on sheer beauty, captivating culture, and truly one-of-a-kind destinations.<\/p>\n

In fairness, the East Coast boasts some incomparable charmers too. I mean, have you been to St. Augustine?<\/p>\n

We at Travel Off Path<\/a> have compiled a list of 5 amazing West Coast getaways we truly believe will wow you at first sight \u2014 and best of all, I’m a resident Californian happy to serve as your guide.<\/p>\n

\"An\"An<\/a><\/p>\n

1) San Diego: LA’s *Almost* Flawless Nemesis<\/p>\n

Hey, it’s not being biased since I chose to move here\u2026<\/p>\n

San Diego won me over from the moment I stepped outside the airport and felt the salty breeze hit me.<\/p>\n

Flash forward 6 months and I swapped Austin, Texas for a California zip code.<\/p>\n

\"La\"La<\/a><\/p>\n

The Vibe: Laid-back beach vibes with underrated urban delights
Perfect For: Beach lovers, craft beer enthusiasts, and outdoorsy explorers<\/p>\n

\u201cAmerica’s Finest City\u201d lives up to its name (minus some new rules<\/a> locals and tourists don’t like, such as Balboa Park parking and unenforced homeless camping laws).<\/p>\n

Other than that, it’s truly a paradise getaway from the tip-top of North County down to the timeless \u201cisland\u201d of Coronado and even upcoming resort towns like my current hometown of Chula Vista.<\/p>\n

One must-see is La Jolla, an undesignated community within San Diego city limits known for sea lion sightings, astounding views you could trick yourself into thinking it’s Maui, and even surprising attractions like The Comedy Store<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Full disclosure: LA doesn’t make this list, and that’s because I personally feel it’s not safe to visit right now, and even Angelenos find themselves vacationing here (though they may never admit it).<\/p>\n

\"White\"White<\/a><\/p>\n

The Padres \u2013 Dodgers rivalry is getting intense\u2026<\/p>\n

2) San Francisco: A Film Set City With Unmatched Scenery<\/p>\n

The Vibe: Iconic, cultural, and shamelessly quirky
Perfect For: Urban adventurers, foodies, and travelers who find any excuse to hop on a boat<\/p>\n

You might think Hollywood is California’s film set. <\/p>\n

Nah, I say it’s San Francisco.<\/p>\n

While there may not be many current films opting for San Francisco as their backdrop, not much has changed over the years in terms of San Fran’s astounding beauty, most easily viewed by booking a boat tour through the bay.<\/p>\n

\"Skyline\"Skyline<\/a><\/p>\n

TV shows and movies such as Mrs. Doubtfire, The Princess Diaries, and of course, Full House, were all filmed here and now serve as popular landmarks.<\/p>\n

Despite some unsightly headlines over the years, many (including myself) believe SF is on the up and up in terms of safety.<\/p>\n

I’ve been twice in the past few years and didn’t catch myself looking over my shoulder, whether perusing Chinatown trinkets or indulging in fresh catches at the Fisherman’s Wharf \u2014 both must-visit neighborhoods.<\/p>\n

Just avoid the Tenderloin district.<\/p>\n

If you enjoy Asian food, you’re in the right city as there’s Chinatown, one of the only authentic Japantowns in the U.S., and one of my favorite restaurants in the world too \u2014 Terra Cotta Warrior<\/a>. <\/p>\n

3) Carmel: Immerse In West Coast Whimsy<\/p>\n

The Vibe: Storybook charm meets upscale seaside
Perfect For: Romantic getaways, slow travelers, pet-friendly road trips<\/p>\n

Just down the mesmerizing coast from The Bay lies Carmel-by-the-sea (more commonly known as Carmel).<\/p>\n

Carmel is one of the most off-the-wall towns you’ll ever find.<\/p>\n

The townscape’s design was inspired by fairytale Hansel & Gretel, but the more modern reference would be to say it feels like Bilbo Baggins may walk out at any moment.<\/p>\n

There are homey inns to call home for the night, hole-in-the-wall dive bars, and fine dining too that will knock your socks off (I personally love Dametra Cafe<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\"Tuck\"Tuck<\/a><\/p>\n

If you thought this town couldn’t get any more bizarre, the town’s claim to fame isn’t just its storybook architecture, it’s the fact that Clint Eastwood was once the mayor.<\/p>\n

But Betty White once called this lovely beach town home too, so that levels out the weirdness.<\/p>\n

Home to Pebble Beach, the stunning 17 Mile Drive, and ample pet-friendly beaches worthy of a postcard, don’t skip Carmel on your next California road trip.<\/p>\n

4) Sequoia National Park: California’s Wonders Extend Beyond The Coast<\/p>\n

The Vibe: Raw, humbling wilderness
Perfect For: Nature lovers, road-trippers, and travelers who hate crowds<\/p>\n

I’m not here to say Yosemite is overrated, but what I am here to say is Sequoia National Park will forever be etched in my mind’s eye as corny as it sounds \u2014 you have to see to believe\u2026<\/p>\n

\"Towering\"Towering<\/a><\/p>\n

Call me a tree hugger if you want, but I couldn’t help but try to wrap my arms around the staggering sequoias, and failed to do so.<\/p>\n

They are truly enormous and seem unfathomable that it’s not just one rogue tree with a growth spurt, but an entire forest of giants.<\/p>\n

Just don’t be a cheap dummy like me by renting a Toyota Yaris. Spend a little extra for 4-wheel drive.<\/p>\n

Yeah, I almost had a Castaway moment without a volleyball\u2026<\/p>\n

Thankfully, my memories now are nothing but a slideshow of magnificent wooded nature with nothing but the sound of silence and letting my dog roam free (don’t tell the park ranger!).<\/p>\n

5) San Clemente: The OC’s Spanish Stunner<\/p>\n

The Vibe: Classic SoCal surf town without the pretentious attitude
Perfect For: Sunset chasers, surfers, and travelers craving relaxed coastal vibes<\/p>\n

\"Drone\"Drone<\/a><\/p>\n

You know Laguna Beach and DisneyLand, but do you know San Clemente?<\/p>\n

Driving up from San Diego, the old-school Denny’s sign is your welcome into Orange County, and that means you’re in the map-dot town of San Clemente.<\/p>\n

This town is special because of its undeniable Spanish flair with red-tiled roofs, Mediterranean-style facades and low-key appeal as a sleepy surf town.<\/p>\n

But there’s also incredible shopping, locally sourced eateries, and underrated hotels here like Sea Horse Resort here too.<\/p>\n

San Clemente has been my go-to escape away from San Diego’s tourists for a decade straight and never fails.<\/p>\n

Find me at The Cellar<\/a> for happy hour. <\/p>\n

Honorable Mention \u2013 Portland: Where Normalcy Is Not Allowed<\/p>\n

The Vibe: Hip, offbeat and borderline edgy
Perfect For: Coffee addicts, laptop warriors, food truck lovers, and anyone tired of the norm<\/p>\n

Portland has had some crime problems, but remember \u2014 this article is about places you \u2018Should Visit At Least Once’ In Their Life’.<\/p>\n

Oregon’s largest city may be a one-and-done visit, but I loved my intro into Portland exactly 1 year ago.<\/p>\n

Is it weird? You betcha!<\/p>\n

Does that make it more fun (especially if traveling solo<\/a>)? No doubt!<\/p>\n

While you don’t want to walk down certain streets late at night, that can be said for a lot of cities.<\/p>\n

Portland lives up to its \u2018Keep Portland Weird’ vibes. My first half-hour in the city, I witnessed a drag show outside a taco truck, was invited to \u2018Karaoke from Hell’, and watched slam poetry rehearsals in an empty parking lot.<\/p>\n

Coffee here is as perfect as it gets, food trucks serve every type of food imaginable, Washington Park is down-right gorgeous and you truly never know what you’ll stumble upon as the city is so easy to explore.<\/p>\n
