BOZEMAN, Mont. \u2013\u00a0Lola Bean<\/a> gutted out a tight battle at No. 5 singles in a super tiebreaker, and the Bobcats won two doubles matches to highlight Montana State’s home opener against Sacramento State on Sunday. The Bobcats fell to the preseason Big Sky favorites, 5-2, in their second conference match of the season to move to 3-6 on the year.

\nLola and Angel Bean<\/a> both fought to super tiebreaker sets against the Hornets, with Lola Bean<\/a> coming away with a 6-4, 6-7 (4), 10-3 victory at No. 5 singles and Angel Bean<\/a> taking her match on court three to extra points in a narrow 6-7 (5), 7-6 (1), 12-10 defeat. The Cats also had a strong showing in doubles with wins on courts one and two to open the day.

\n“I’m so proud of how this team came out and competed today,” Montana State head coach Hailey Barrett said. “We got off to a great start by winning the doubles point and playing together. Singles was a tough battle on every court. Angel had an incredible match and was points away from victory. Lola played another gritty match, and I’m proud of her for pulling it out again. It was wonderful to have the support of our home crowd and compete on our courts. We’ll learn a lot from this and be better for the next one.”

\nThe Cats earned a come-from-behind victory in doubles to clinch the opening point of the day. Lola Bean<\/a> and Elle Middleton<\/a> fell on court three, 6-2, to Reese Walker and Cam Maldonado Gutierrez in the first match before Angel Bean<\/a> and Nia Gelashvili<\/a> defeated Emilija Pranyte and Palina Saulevich, 6-2, to bring the Bobcats even with the Hornets. Terezie Stverakova<\/a> and Anna Wise<\/a> earned a court-one victory over Irene Riva and Lou Baudouin, 6-3, to clinch the doubles point for the Cats to give Montana State the early lead.

\nThe Hornets bounced back in singles, taking four-straight matches in straight sets to clinch the victory. The Bean sisters both took their respective opponents to super tiebreakers in the final two matches of the day. Angel Bean<\/a> played three-straight tiebreaker sets in a match that came down to extra points in a narrow 6-7 (5), 7-6 (1), 12-10 loss to Riva at No. 3 singles. On court five, Lola Bean<\/a> gutted out a 6-4, 6-7 (4), 10-3 victory over Pranyte after each of her final two sets went to tiebreakers. Bean took six-straight points to open her third and final set, helping her to cruise to victory on Sunday.\u00a0

\nMontana State heads back on the road this week, taking on Eastern Washington in Cheney, Wash., on March 6, before traveling to Spokane, Wash., to face Gonzaga on March 7. Both matches are set for 11 a.m. MT.
