{"id":200581,"date":"2026-03-02T14:47:07","date_gmt":"2026-03-02T14:47:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/200581\/"},"modified":"2026-03-02T14:47:07","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T14:47:07","slug":"port-of-l-a-breaks-ground-on-more-waterfront-park-space-in-wilmington","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/200581\/","title":{"rendered":"Port of L.A. breaks ground on more waterfront park space in Wilmington"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At a ceremony held on February 2026, officials with the Port of Los Angeles broke ground on <a href=\"https:\/\/la.urbanize.city\/tags\/avalon-promenad-and-gateway\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the more than $150-million Avalon Pedestrian Bridge and Promenade Gateway<\/a> project, the latest open space along the Los Angeles Waterfront.<\/p>\n<p>The project, which will be located on an approximately 12-acre site along both sides of Avalon Boulevard to the south of Harry Bridges Boulevard, will abut the Wilmington Waterfront Promenade, <a href=\"https:\/\/la.urbanize.city\/post\/773m-wilmington-waterfront-promenade-makes-its-debut\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a nine-acre park opened by the Port of Los Angeles in early 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"image-and-caption\">\n<a class=\"fancybox\" href=\"https:\/\/la.urbanize.city\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/1140w\/public\/2025-03\/promenade%20gateway%20rendering%201.jpg?itok=VbooH2Pg\" rel=\"article-image-set nofollow noopener\" title=\"T.Y. Lin International<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are thrilled to begin construction on this transformational project that will create more green space and recreational opportunities for Wilmington residents and visitors alike,\u201d said Mayor Karen Bass in a news release. \u201cBy transforming 12 acres of former industrial land, this project is one of the many ways we are working to revitalize, reimagine, and build connections in communities across the city. I want to thank Governor Newsom, Councilmember McOsker, the LA Board of Harbor Commissioners, and the Port for moving this historic investment forward that will benefit residents and local businesses for generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Plans call for an entry plaza at Harry Bridges Boulevard, including an artistic sundial, which would steer visitors along the project&#8217;s namesake promenade across a new pedestrian bridge above the freight rail corridor that runs through the site. \u00a0Other project elements would include picnic areas, parking, facilities, and playgrounds.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/la.urbanize.city\/tags\/ty-lin-international\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">T.Y. Lin International<\/a> is designing the bridge and promenade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"image-and-caption\">\n<a class=\"fancybox\" href=\"https:\/\/la.urbanize.city\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/1140w\/public\/2025-03\/promenade%20gateway%20current%20conditions.jpg?itok=RRhxWCZd\" rel=\"article-image-set nofollow noopener\" title=\"Port of Los Angeles\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"image-950w article-inline-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/promenade gateway current conditions.jpg\" width=\"950\"\/><\/a><br \/>\nCurrent conditions of Avalon Pedestrian Bridge and Promenade GatewayPort of Los Angeles<\/p>\n<p>Completion is expected in Summer 2028.<\/p>\n<p>The Port of Los Angeles has spent heavily on open space in the Wilmington and San Pedro communities in recent years, including the<a href=\"https:\/\/la.urbanize.city\/post\/port-los-angeles-breaks-ground-second-phase-waterfront-promenade\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> second and final phase of the San Pedro waterfront promenade<\/a>.
